Coffee Roasters Australia: Gold Coast couple invent new probiotic coffee capsule

A Gold Coast company’s capsule invention is getting the attention of the world’s coffee industry.

A GOLD Coast company is making waves in the global coffee world with the launch of the very first capsule to contain a probiotic.

Arundel-based Coffee Roasters Australia (CRA) recently unveiled the Podbiotic capsule at Host Milano, a prestigious industry trade show held in the home of coffee, Italy.

CRA Director and the brainchild behind Podbiotic, Alana Beattie, said the product was incredibly well received at the show which attracted almost 200,000 visitors.

“It was overwhelming,” she said. “We are talking to some large companies around licensing, so hopefully will be able to announce those deals soon.”

Ms Beattie said the Nespresso compatible capsule contains 25 billion good bacteria in every capsule, is compostable, and most importantly – tastes the same.

“Probiotics include good bacteria which help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your digestive system,” she said.

“Probiotics can assist your body to produce vitamins, absorb nutrients from your food, and even help regulate your mood,” she said.

Ms Beattie said her background prior to starting the business with husband Mark, working at companies such as Pfizer and Nestle, gave her a good insight into functional food.

“We started manufacturing capsules in 2012 and were always looking for innovation in the capsule market,” she said.

“We were the first to move to compostable capsules in 2016 and are the number one manufacturer of compostable capsules now in Australia.

“Wanting to continue to innovate we decided to focus on health and functional food.”

The Podbiotic Postbiotic Barista Blend is manufactured by Probiotics Australia, the country’s first and only certified facility for probiotic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing.

“This ensures only the highest quality good bacteria into every capsule,” she said.

Ms Beattie said Podbiotic capsules are 100 per cent biodegradable and compostable, and would soon be joined by new product lines including an organic blend and a decaffeinated version.

“We’re also rolling out into other capsule formats soon,” she said.
