The P&C at a Gold Coast primary school has been named the best in Queensland after a stunning fundraising drive that even roped in rock legend Paul Kelly.
Tamborine Mountain State School P&C took out the Innovative Fundraising category before being named overall winner at P&Cs Queensland’s annual State Conference.
The win was recognition of an extraordinary fundraising event at the school called Rockin’ The Rainforest which was headlined by Mr Kelly and also featured a suite of national and local bands.
Tamborine Mountain State School principal Jason Smith said the Easter Sunday event, which was attended by 2000 people, had raised $68,000.
“It (the award) was a big accolade for our region,” Mr Smith said.
“We are so proud of what our P&C has achieved for our school and the community.
“A special congratulations to Mandy Corbett, Kelly Hatezic and Sharyn Blocksidge for their amazing organisation and leadership, delivering this very special Tamborine Mountain community event, and to P&C committee member Russell Smith for inviting Paul Kelly to our beautiful mountain.”
Mr Smith said profits from the event would go towards putting a roof on the school’s basketball court, which is used by local sporting clubs as well as the school’s students.
“It means we have kids and adults playing at the weekends there and we can have sports classes undercover rain hail or shine,” he said.
“It’s certainly a community project, it’s not just a school one, and we’re still very proud of it.
“Up at Tamborine Mountain, everything is around community.”
It’s not the first time the 557-pupil school has scooped a major award.
In 2018, the school was named Government Primary School of the Year at the National Education Awards.
