A GOLD COAST school has begun work on a major $8 million expansion as it works to cater for demand fuelled by families moving from interstate.
Somerset College in Mudgeeraba on Thursday held a smoking ceremony to mark construction of a new Junior School building, multi-sport synthetic grass sports facility and car park.
Headmaster Craig Bassingthwaighte said the project would serve the school well into the future.
“We are delighted to see these projects start to come to life as they will greatly benefit our current and future students and families, as well as the wider Gold Coast community,” said Mr Bassingthwaighte.
“Our vision for Somerset College is to create an enriched and seamless learning experience and we believe investing in the development of new classrooms for our Junior School, as well as additional facilities such as the multi-sport facility and a new car park will provide tremendous value.”
Eight new classrooms, a breakout reading room, flexible indoor-outdoor learning environments and new playground experiences will be included in the Junior School expansion, which is due to be completed by October this year.
The new sports facility, which will be the size of an international hockey pitch, will be used for a host of sports and activities across all year levels. It will also be available for use by the wider community for sporting events and training.
