Significant water damage and collapsed ceilings have been blamed for the delay in Helensvale State High School’s reopening after ex-tropical cyclone Alfred.

The campus was the last Gold Coast school to reopen, nearly a week after others.

Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the school had many older classrooms, dating back to its 1990 opening.

“There were more than 50 spaces here which were affected by a lot of mould but there were power outages, ceilings were lost, ceilings collapsed, just as it happened in other schools around the place,” he said.

Mr Langbroek said the Gold Coast’s schools were the worst affected by the cyclone.
