Tributes are being paid to long-serving former St Hilda’s School principal Josie James after she passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86.
Mrs James, who served as principal at the all-girls school from 1989 to 2002, is being remembered a “much-loved” and “inspiring” school leader.
Professor Susan Brandis, Chairman of St Hilda’s School Council, said in a statement that Mrs James was a dedicated and passionate advocate for girls’ education.
“Mrs James bought a wealth of experience to the principalship of St Hilda’s and a very clear vision and determination to help move the school forward into the 21st century, establishing it as the ‘cutting-edge’ of girls’ education,” Prof Brandis said.
“I was fortunate enough to commence as a Member of School Council during Mrs James’ tenure as Principal of St Hilda’s School, and my daughter Melanie also graduated in 2000 with Mrs James as Principal.
“Her advocation for all-girls education was deeply admired by those who had the privilege to work alongside her, and her dedication is greatly reflected in St Hilda’s School life today.”
Professor Brandis said other positions held by Mrs James included Former Chair of the Queensland branch of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia, Former Dean of Students at All Hallows’ School in Brisbane and Former Chair of the Anglican Schools Commission, Queensland.
“She served others for the entirety of her life and loved seeing people achieve their best - encouraging, mentoring, and celebrating their successes,” Professor Brandis said.
“She was truly an inspiring educator and mentor to many.”
A funeral service for Mrs James will be held at The Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, Ann Street Brisbane on Friday 20 January at 10am.
Her family have requested that in lieu of flowers donations are made to the St Hilda’s Foundation.
