The Gold Coast will truly live up to its Glitter Strip moniker this New Year’s Eve as the council puts on dramatic fireworks displays across the city.
Mayor Tom Tate said there will be many different venues for Gold Coasters to watch the glittering displays.
“How we’ve designed this year is that we’ve got early starts, some places start at four, some places start at six, for families,” he said.
“A lot of places have fireworks at 8pm and again at midnight and there’s so many different themes to have your pick.
“Take time to really enjoy your family and friends, that’s how we celebrate on the Gold Coast.”
Manager at Skylighter Fireworks Nick Kozij said barges were ready to go for the Surfers Paradise and Broadwater shows.
“This year’s theme (for the Surfers Paradise show) is ‘All That Glitters’, and we’ve created a soundtrack that’s a mix of a lot of famous songs as well as some oldies,” he said.
“There’s about 50,000 shots off this barge at Surfers Paradise, right up to six and eight inch shells.”
Mr Kozij said there were multiple fireworks shows happening across the Gold Coast.
“The council themselves have four free shows that are happening, which is great so no matter what your circumstances are, you can come down enjoy a free night on the beach,” he said.
“The Broadwater has a very different show this year, because it’s a country and western theme, and they’re all done to soundtrack, so it’s all synchronised perfectly.
“Last year it was pouring with rain and there was thousands of people on the beach dancing, having a great time.
“I think the weather’s going to be really good and the Gold Coast council have really turned it on.
“It’s going to be an amazing night here on the on the Gold Coast and it’s definitely going to live up to its Glitter Strip name.”
Police are imploring partygoers to plan ahead and be respectful when attending celebrations so everyone can have the best possible start to the new year.
To facilitate the large crowds expected to descend upon Surfers Paradise to ring in the new year, Acting Superintendent Jason Tuffley said people should be prepared for roads to be closed.
“Several key roads in Surfers Paradise will be closed from 4pm on December 31 to 2am on January 1,” Superintendent Tuffley said.
“Those attending the celebrations are encouraged to use public transport, with additional bus and light rail services operating throughout the night.
“Police will maintain a strong presence to ensure a safe and family friendly atmosphere.
“New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest nights on the Gold Coast calendar, and we’re committed to ensuring everyone can celebrate safely.
“We’re asking party goers to plan ahead, stay with friends, and respect others while enjoying the festivities.
“If you’re drinking, know your limits and arrange a safe way home.”
He said police will have a palpable presence on the streets, and will not tolerate any anti-social behaviour.
“Residents and visitors are reminded that alcohol consumption is prohibited in public areas and personal fireworks are strictly illegal,” he said.
