Acknowledging “no-one would believe this”, Kelly Rowland speaks for the first time about being “rich broke” and almost losing everything.

She was a part of one of the world’s top-selling girl groups and has forged her own successful solo career for almost two decades – but behind the scenes, Kelly Rowland was struggling to keep up financially.

The former Destiny’s Child singer and The Voice coach made the shocking confession in a recent YouTube interview with her pastor, Erwin McManus, speaking on issues of generosity and charity.

“No-one would believe this, and this’ll actually be the first time I'm gonna talk about it. I almost lost everything, because I was so busy trying to keep up,” Rowland revealed.

“Whether it was the look, the car, the wardrobe, the place, you know what I mean? All that silliness. (I was) ‘rich broke’.”

Rowland did not say when this period of financial insecurity happened, but implied it took place at a time when her career appeared to be flourishing to those on the outside.

Rowland said she called a trusted friend and confessed she didn’t know what to do about her money troubles.

She said her friend was shocked – but asked her when was the last time she gave money to charity.

“I said, ‘I don’t know, but I can’t afford to give right now.’ She said ‘You have to. The very next cheque that you get, I need you to give.’

“I called my business manager and told him, he said ‘Are you kidding me? Have you lost your mind?’ Then I got a new person in who (also) said ‘You cannot do this right now.’”

But Rowland said she insisted – and claimed that as soon as she did, “good things” started to happen to her as her financial situation slowly started to turn around. From there, she vowed to keep donating a proportion of her income.

“I remember calling my business manager saying ‘This month I am giving 20 per cent’. He said ‘You have lost your mind’ … but I love to give.”

Today, 39-year-old Rowland is worth an estimated $AU17 million, having sold over 30 million records as a solo artist and another 60 million with Destiny’s Child.
