Another contestant faced the chopping block during Tuesday’s episode of The Masked Singer Australia, with “wildcard” competitor Microphone, who entered the show after the first week, revealed to be former Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams.

And it seems girl group members recognise each other: As Microphone sang the opening line of her final performance, the Journey classic Don’t Stop Believin’, judge Mel B announced: “That is who I said it is from the beginning.” The former Spice Girl had correctly identified Williams since her first performance.

Forget the nasty “Poor Michelle” memes that unfairly compared her to bandmates Beyonce and Kelly Rowland in the early noughties – Williams is music royalty, one-third of one of the most successful girl groups of all time.

And the panel were clearly starstruck, with Abbie Chatfield reduced to tears at the sight of Williams and Mel B declaring her an “icon.”

The love affair went both ways, with Williams labelling the Spice Girls the “blueprint” and saying she was so excited to finally meet Mel after Destiny’s Child never bumped into the Spice Girls in their heyday.

With a string of global number one hits, Destiny’s Child sold more than 60 million records during their career, most of them after Williams joined the group in early 2000.

Since the group disbanded in 2005, Williams has released several solo albums and fostered a successful musical theatre career across Broadway and the West End.

Given her enormous global success as one-third of Destiny’s Child, Williams is arguably the biggest “get” in Masked Singer Australia’s four seasons so far – bigger even than last season’s winner Anastacia.

Williams’ elimination from the competition leaves just three contestants set to battle it out during Sunday’s grand finale: Rooster, Snapdragon and Mirrorball. The latter has been widely tipped by fans since before the season started as another international girl group member: Former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton.

Before that, though, Ten have scheduled a surprise “bonus” episode of Masked Singer for Wednesday night, teasing that a new contestant will introduce – and unmask – a new one-episode wonder, ‘Poodle’, who is being billed as an “international megastar”.

Meanwhile, affable Masked Singer host Osher Gunsberg delivered a surprisingly stinging clapback on Twitter during Monday’s episode of the show, after a viewer complained he’d “spoiled” the result of the episode after it had aired on television.

“Oh I’m so sorry that I came into your house, unlocked your phone, and forced you to look at an app,” he replied.

The Masked Singer continues 7:30pm Wednesday before Sunday’s season finale.
