SEVEN months ago trumpet teacher Laura Gilbert stood at a Sydney train station wearing “not very much” while dressed up as Suicide Squad character Harley Quinn.
“It was very terrifying but it’s a character which requires a lot of confidence to pull off,” the 21-year-old said.
Now that the character has been made even more famous by actor Margot Robbie, Ms Gilbert — who has 280,000 Instagram followers — is one of the most in-demand Cosplayers in the country.
And she’s headed to the Gold Coast for the city’s Superhero Weekend.
“When I got to my first Supanova convention everyone wanted to take photos of each other, so I kind of got addicted to it, it’s a whole world you can escape into,” she said.
Anchored by the three-day Supanova Pop Culture Expo at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre starting on Friday, Gold Coast Superhero Weekend will serve up a massive program of entertainment for crowds of all ages.
Ms Gilbert will join thousands of diehard Cosplayers who are so committed to imitating pop culture characters they spend up to $5000 on costumes.
The weekend culminates in the colourful, traffic-stopping Supanova Superhero Parade through the streets of Broadbeach at 9am on Sunday.
The parade finishes at the Gold Coast Convention Centre as doors open on the final day of the Supanova Expo.
