Weekend sport presenter Abbey Gelmi exits Channel 7, Melbourne

The weekend newsreader says it is “time for a new chapter” after joining the Seven network in April 2022, but she has already started in another job.

Sport presenter Abbey Gelmi has confirmed her exit from Channel 7, weeks after she took up a high profile gig at the ABC.

Gelmi has become the second host to exit Channel 7, just weeks after the network’s weekend weather presenter Sonia Marinelli tendered her resignation.

Gelmi officially parted ways with 7News Melbourne, with the presenter describing the move as the “right time for the next chapter.”

She told The Herald Sun the network was informed of her decision not to renew her contract on Thursday.

“I’m forever grateful for the experience and life long friends gained”, she said.

She had been due back from maternity leave after giving birth to her second son in November.

It was a mutual decision that aligned with Seven’s decision to move the network in a different direction, Ms Gelmi said.

“From the Olympics, to the AFL, cricket, motorsport and horse racing – Abbey has covered it all”, director of Seven News Chris Salter said.

“She’s the ultimate all rounder – and leaves Seven with some lifelong friends. We know she’ll be a success in whatever she chooses to do next“.

The presenter co-hosted the Tokyo Olympics and Winter Olympics for the network and is likely to be replaced by sports reporter Theo Doropulos.

She started presenting ABC TV’s popular Sunday sports panel program, Offsiders, earlier this year after Kelli Underwood finished with the show after six years.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Offsiders in 2025,” Ms Gelmi said of the appointment last month. “The opportunity to talk all things sport with the calibre of panellists who frequent the show is both exciting and humbling.

“It’s an honour to follow those who have hosted before me and I can’t wait for the early Sunday mornings!” .

Ms Gelmi, who is married to AFL star Kane Lambert, opened up about her health battle during her recent pregnancy last year and revealed she suffered a “debilitating” case of hyperemesis gravidarum.

“Pregnancy is such a sensitive subject and my thoughts are with those struggling, however, I wanted to share our experience with Hyperemesis in the hope that those who endure it know they’re not alone,” Gelmi wrote in an Instagram post last year.

“While we’re so grateful to be adding to our family, HG has been debilitating.

“I’ve been in hospital three days a week for most of the first trimester, unable to keep anything down or leave bed with relentless nausea. I’d get dizzy when I stood, couldn’t care for (firstborn) Louis and my mental health took a dive”.
