Swell features 52 sculptures scattered from Elephant Rock and Currumbin Alley

Festival executive director Dee Steinfort said this year’s festival was the biggest ever and included interactive pieces for people of all ages to enjoy.

HUNDREDS of people have flocked to Currumbin to check out the latest creations at the annual the Swell Sculpture Festival.

The 17th annual event features 52 sculptures ranging from a giant rat to a massive hand.

Festival executive director Dee Steinfort said this year’s festival was the biggest ever and included interactive pieces for people of all ages to enjoy.

“Swell is always evolving and the open application always get a real variety of art and there’s something different every year,” Ms Steinfort said.

“We are thrilled with the number of people attending.

“The local businesses including the Currumbin Life Saving Club have been packed out.

“Depending on what time of day you go there, the sculptures look different in different lighting.”

The sculptures in the main exhibition are spread between Elephant Rock and Currumbin Alley.

The festival includes a photography competition for attendees featuring a $1000-prize.

“Photography is a huge feature of the event with people bringing along various devices from smartphones to amazing cameras with 40cm lenses,” she said.

“The competition is for photos taken at Swell, to be part use the hashtag #SWELLsnap2019 when posting to Instagram.”

The festival continues until next Sunday.
