DAREDEVIL entertainer Stuntman Joel is sharpening his act up ahead of this year’s Brazilian-themed Buskers by the Creek Festival at Currumbin.

The death-defying performer, aka Joel Fenton, juggles chainsaws and performs near-impossible tricks with knives, fire and unicycles.

“When I was 12 I learnt how to juggle knives, breathe fire and ride a unicycle,” he says.

“I’ve been performing for more than 20 years now and it’s taken me all over the world so many times.”

Fenton admits his act doesn’t always go to plan.

“All my arms and fingers are intact — there’s just a few scars on my hands from when I was learning how to juggle axes really high in the air,” he says.

Fenton is one of more than 300 Australian and international buskers preparing to put their hats in the ring for the fifth annual Buskers by the Creek, a community celebration in Winders Park, Currumbin, on October 13-14.

The free, family and dog-friendly event will also feature Matt Katsis, 2017 Battle of the Buskers winners Salt & Steel and Brisbane singing sister duo Innocent Eve, Juzzie Smith and Darryl James.

Local and international buskers on the bill will perform from 10am to 6pm each day as the event gets its salsa and samba on with Brazilian acts, roaming dancers, feathers, sequins and carnival-style bling.

While the performers play for free, crowds are asked to bring their spare change so they can reward their favourite acts with tips.

The Currumbin Pub, in Traders Way, will kickstart the festival weekend on October 12, when 14 festival acts line up for the Battle of the Buskers event.
