GETTING cake thrown at his face by Kermit, heckled by Waldorf and Statler and a selfie with Animal is the measure of success for American popera star Josh Groban.

The gifted singer, who will return to Australia to perform with our orchestras in April next year, co-starred with The Muppets and YouTube music superstar Lindsey Stirling in the video for his rendition of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory classic Pure Imagination.

“Waldorf and Statler called it the worst video ever, which was awesome,” the singer and actor said.

The frequent Australian visitor smashed back into the global pop charts with Stages, his collection of favourite Broadway tunes recorded at the famed Abbey Road Studios in London.

He said Pure Imagination had been a frequent request from his ardent fans, the Grobanites, who have supported his career since he guest starred on the top-rating Ally McBeal series in 2001.

Groban, who was also championed by Oprah Winfrey has gone on to sell more than 25 million albums worldwide.

He cringes when recalling he bought rock star leather suit pants to wear for his first ever performance on Oprah and has never worn them since.

“I had strep throat, tonsillitis and wore leather pants. They had a silk suit lining so they didn’t chafe which was good because my throat hurt enough,” he recalled.

After his role on Ally McBeal, Groban has popped up in several television and film comedies including The Office, Crazy, Stupid Love and Muppets Most Wanted.

The 34-year-old entertainer, who is dating Two Broke Girls actress Kat Dennings said he loved playing “douche bags”, modelling his characters on the boys who would pick on the shy, awkward singer at high school.

“That’s my revenge because I sat next to those kids at school and now I get to play them for money,” he said.

Groban will perform with the Sydney Symphony at the Opera House on April 19 and 20, his third time gracing the iconic stage, as well as concerts with orchestra and choir at the palais Theatre in Melbourne on April 25 and Brisbane Exhibition Centre on April 28.

Tickets are on sale from August 3.
