Peloton responds to And Just Like That

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Sex and the City’s And Just Like That. You have been warned.

One of television’s most beloved characters – yes, we’re talking about Sex and the City’s Mr Big – might have met his unfortunate end on a Peloton bike, but the exercise equipment company has had the last laugh.

SATC’s long-awaited sequel did the unthinkable, killing off Carrie Bradshaw’s longtime love interest with a heart attack during a 45-minute session on a stationary Peloton bike.

It was emotional. Carrie clutched Mr Big’s arm as her infamous voiceover declared: “And just like that, Big died”.

The moment sent shockwaves around the world (no exaggeration).

Less than two days after the episode premiered, Peloton shares nosedived by 11 per cent, hitting a 52-week low of $37.67 on Friday.

Now Peloton have responded to the controversy with a parody ad that has resurrected Mr Big and matched him with Jess King – the exact same Peloton instructor from the show (sorry Carrie).

Released on Monday morning, Noth reappears in the ad, sitting on a couch and gazing into King’s eyes.

“To new beginnings,” he says, to which she responds with: “To new beginnings.”

He then asks her to start another Peloton session.

“Should we did in on a ride?” he says. “Life’s too short not to.”

While no references are specifically made to his character, or the And Just Like That reboot, the voiceover (done by actor Ryan Reynolds, no less) is an obvious riff on Carrie’s.

“And just like that,” begins Reynolds. “The world was reminded that regular cycling stimulates and improves your heart, lungs and circulation. … Cycling strengthens your heart muscles, lowers resting pulse and reduces blood fat levels. He’s alive.”

As expected, responses on Twitter have come in thick and fast.

“Peloton was faster with a response than Carrie was with dialing 911,” shared on comment.

“So it appears that Peloton is telling us that men in their late 60s could easily attract women in their mid-30s, if only they trained on Peloton. Seems plausible. Must be true,” wrote another.

“I might also fake my death to get out from under Carrie,” shared another.

This isn’t the first time Peloton have responded to the contentious scenes either.

After the first episode of And Just Like That was released on Thursday, a member of Peloton’s health and wellness advisory council, Dr Suzanne Steinbaum, put the blame of Mr Big’s death on his “extravagant lifestyle”.

“Mr. Big lived what many would call an extravagant lifestyle — including cocktails, cigars, and big steaks — and was at serious risk as he had a previous cardiac event in Season 6,” she said, speaking to the LA Times.

“These lifestyle choices and perhaps even his family history, which often is a significant factor, were the likely cause of his death. Riding his Peloton Bike may have even helped delay his cardiac event.”

Since the company’s launch in 2014, the stationary luxury exercise bike have earned a cult following among the celebrities and influencers. Ellen DeGeneres, Miley Cyrus, Kate Hudson and Lizzo are just some of the bike’s high-profile fans.

In Australia, the bikes start at $2295 for the standard Peloton Bike, with the Bike + costing up to $4395.

However, reports indicate the company may be struggling with slowing sales, with CNBC reporting that Peloton implemented a hiring freeze and declining revenue figures at a company all-hands in November this year.
