Natalie Imbruglia has revealed a sad reason why she wore baggy clothing in the music video for her smash-hit song, Torn.

The 47-year-old Australian singer released the Grammy-nominated pop song in 1997, starring in a video which saw her wear army pants and a casual zipped hoodie.

Years later, the singer has revealed the outfit wasn’t “in fashion”, and that she wore it due to insecurities about her body.

“The army pants weren‘t even cool army pants, they weren’t in fashion or anything,” Imbruglia told The Independent.

“My intention in wearing that was so that you couldn’t see my silhouette, because I didn’t want anyone to see. But it ended up that there was a power in that because it was like [seen as] androgyny cool.

“But it really came from a place of ‘Thank god I don’t have to wear a dress.’”

Elsewhere in the interview, the former Neighbours actress delved into her struggles trying to make it in music, saying she racked up significant debt.

“I couldn’t get a work permit and I couldn’t get jobs. When I signed my record deal, my UK visa was about to run out and I owed two grand to my landlord,” she said.

“And you know, I was in debt and I’d been famous for being on this TV show.”

Imbruglia played Beth Brennan on Neighbours in the early ’90s, before finally getting her big break in music three years after leaving the soap with the release of Torn.

She released her sixth studio album Firebird in September last year, marking her return to showbiz after a six year hiatus.

Imbruglia told ABC News Breakfast at the time she took the lengthy break due to “writer’s block”.

“I couldn’t even sing a note and I kept saying, ‘Shall we go have a coffee?’ And making excuses and that’s when I realised I was really stuck,” she said.

In a bid to break out of her funk, the singer enrolled in a 10-day writing intensive in Nashville in 2018.

“I had a bit of a breakthrough,” she said.

“You’ve got to be willing to write some bad songs to get to the good ones and I was just determined.

“I missed singing my own stories on stage. I was determined to get over [the writer’s block].”

On the personal front, Imbruglia welcomed her first child, son Max, in October 2019. The baby was conceived using IVF and a sperm donor.
