Oasis have reunited on stage for the first time in 16 years, kicking off their long-awaited reunion tour in Cardiff, Wales, on Friday night.
In an emotional moment on the tour’s opening night, Liam and Noel Gallagher took to the stage at Principality Stadium to a sellout crowd of 74,500 fans, who greeted the brothers with deafening applause.
Before hitting the stage, their track F****n’ in the Bushes played in the background as newspaper headlines and tweets from over the years flashed up on the big screens. The duo then kicked off their set with the 1995 track Hello.
As they began belting out their next track, Acquiesce, Liam – sporting his trademark puffer jacket – shouted into the microphone, “It’s good to be back”.
He addressed the crowd again before their third song, (What’s the story) Morning Glory?, telling their fans, “Hello people, it’s been too long.”
Among the sellout crowd were famous faces, including Eastenders actor Danny Dyer and One Direction star Louis Tomlinson.
The rock duo were also seen affectionately smiling and nodding at one another, with photographs showing them hand-in-hand at one point.
Fans couldn’t contain their excitement, with many expressing their joy over the July 4 reunion on social media.
“It maybe Independence Day in America, but for us Brits, it’s the day Oasis played their first gig for their reunion tour,” one tweeted on X, as another wrote, “The most important thing to ever happen on the 4th of july was and forever will be that f***ing oasis reunion today.”
“The Oasis reunion has officially happened … absolutely losing my f***ing mind watching the oasis reunion right now,” another tweeted, as one commented, “Happy oasis reunion day everyone, life is so beautiful. I am totally in tears, this is history. I love these two divas so so much.”
Fans watched from all corners of society too.
“Crying at the gym to oasis reunion,” one tweeted, as another wrote, “watching the oasis reunion through a grainy livestream wasn’t part of the bingo card of my wildest dreams lmao”.
Another fan called it “one of the most beautiful comebacks in music history. Now lets pray that you guys don’t kill each other before this reunion tour is over”.
Oasis will perform one more show in Cardiff before embarking on their Oasis Live ‘25 tour of 41 cities around the world.
The duo have also added Aussie dates, performing in Melbourne and Sydney in October and November.
“People of the land down under. You better run – you better take cover … We are coming. You are most welcome,” they wrote in a statement when announcing the shows last October.
Oasis’ 90s gigs were iconic, but the chance to see them perform again was long seen as a remote prospect, following one of music’s bitterest break-ups.
A furious bust-up between the twosome moments before a gig in Paris in 2009 led to the band’s infamous break-up.
Their feud then simmered until this year, when they announced plans for a highly lucrative reunion tour, with tickets selling out in minutes.
According to The Sun, the tour is tipped to gross £400 million (A$778 million).
“With tickets, sponsorship, merchandise and filming, I would predict an income for Noel and Liam of over £50 million (A$97 million) each,” music industry expert Professor Jonathan Shalit, chairman of talent agency InterTalent, told the outlet.
“This is a tour that could easily gross over £400 million.”
