Another week, another raft of chart records for Australian pop phenomenon Tones and I.
The young busker turned chart slayer is the first artist – local or international – to celebrate 14 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA singles chart with her smash hit Dance Monkey.
If she can manage to hold steady at the top spot for just two more weeks, she will claim the ultimate title held by Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, which spent 15 non-consecutive weeks atop the ARIA singles chart two years ago.
The artist known as Toni Watson on her passport (which is about to get a lot of stamps), isn’t just dominating the Australian pop scene.
As she heads overseas next week for her first European tour, which is completely sold out, she claims a fifth week at No. 1 on the UK charts.
The last Australian act to manage a five-week streak on top of the UK pop chart was Gotye’s Somebody I Used To Know in 2012.
Dance Monkey has more than half a billion song and video streams and will get yet another boost from fans courtesy of a stunning grand piano version she posted two weeks ago.
The song has hit No. 1 in 16 countries thus far and is on a rapid rise in the US, jumping up 24 spots last week to land at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.

With the quirky synth pop song continuing its viral growth on streaming sites and American media starting to take notice of the unique Australian artist, it is a good bet she will crack the US top 10 within the next few weeks.
She remains on top of Spotify’s Global chart, the first Australian artist to generate the volume of streams usually associated with the titans of the format such as Sheeran and Drake.
After her European tour, Tones returns to Australia for the 2019 ARIA Awards on November 27 where she is nominated in eight categories including Song of the Year and Best Female Artist.
The shy performer who wants to connect with the global youth activist movement via the title track of her The Kids Are Coming EP has made no secret of her desire to topple Sheeran’s record and get to 16 weeks at No.1.
“It would mean that an Aussie held the Aussie chart record and that is the coolest thing,” the singer told News Corp Australia recently.
