Tones and I, Hilltop Hoods and Guy Sebastian among Aussie artists to sing at ARIA Awards

The Australian artists to join international pop stars Halsey and Dua Lipa on the ARIA awards have been announced. But there’s not as many as other years.

It is a no-brainer global pop phenomenon Tones and I would get her moment to shine on the 2019 ARIA Awards stage.

With eight nominations for her stunning breakthrough onto the Australian charts with Dance Monkey and the debut EP The Kids Are Coming, Tones is one of the first homegrown artists confirmed to perform at the awards in Sydney on November 27.

The other artists booked to bring their big hits to a global audience via the inaugural YouTube stream of the awards include hip hop heroes Hilltop Hoods, indie pop debutante Thelma Plum and blues soul rockers Teskey Brothers.

Guy Sebastian, who has had a stellar year off the back of his emotional pop anthem Choir, will swap his ARIAs host hat for his dancing shoes to bring his consummate live skills to the awards.

And the 2019 Hall of Fame inductees Human Nature will deliver their smooth Motown style to the telecast.

Halsey to bring star power to ARIA Awards

“It has been a brilliant year for Australian music and this is reflected in the amazing group of Australian artists who will take to the ARIA stage,” said ARIA CEO Dan Rosen.

“It is wonderful to have three artists who will performing on the ARIAs for the first time in Tones and I, Thelma Plum and Teskey Brothers.

“All of our Australian performers have had an incredible 2019, making music that have moved audiences around the world and here at home. I cannot wait for Australian fans to tune into an incredible night of music at the ARIA Awards.’’

While Australian artists are indeed enjoying success at home and overseas, it was interesting to note this year international guests Halsey and Dua Lipa were announced before our local stars. They will help to capture the attention of international fans to the awards’ stream.

There appears to be two slots of the typical 10 performances yet to be filled, with one rumoured to be yet another international pop star.

This means only seven ARIA nominees will get to perform this year, compared to the usual eight Australian artists.

So where are all the other Australian nominees who have enjoyed an “incredible 2019”?

Six-times nominee Julia Jacklin is touring in the US so unavailable and Paul Kelly has a gig the night after the ARIAs in Castlemaine so probably wouldn’t be keen on diverting to the Star Event Centre in Sydney.

While all of the Australian artists announced are brilliant live performers and deserve to celebrate their success in front of the television audience at home and YouTube viewers abroad, the ARIAs need to deliver a big wow moment, an unexpected collaboration between homegrown heroes to get everyone lighting up social media.

And they’ve got less than three weeks to pull it off.

THE ARIA Awards will be held at the Star Event Centre on November 27 and broadcast on Nine.
