A chance meeting backstage at Coachella last year has forged a beautiful musical friendship between a Spice Girl and a famous Aussie DJ.

They say never meet your heroes, but Aussie DJ star Anna Lunoe’s chance meeting with Spice Girl Melanie C backstage at the Coachella festival last year has forged a beautiful musical friendship.

The pair have dropped their hot club collaboration Girl ahead of Sydney’s Mardi Gras celebrations this weekend.

Spice Girls fangirl Lunoe, who has broken the glass ceiling for female DJs here and on the world stage, said she struck up a friendship with the pop superstar and DJ after they crossed paths at the American festival in April last year.

“People say never to meet your idols but getting to meet Mel backstage at Coachella in 2024 and subsequently become friends was one of my favourite moments of last year,” she said.

“It’s been so amazing to get to know the wonderful person behind the icon and this song found its home with Mel’s incredible vocal tone and heart. Is this actually happening? Ahh!”

Mel C is a regular visitor to Australia to perform DJ sets and this year will join the coaches’ line-up on The Voice Australia alongside Kate Miller-Heidke, Ronan Keating and Richard Marx.

She said the two DJs bonded not only over music but “being mums.”

“After meeting at Coachella last year Anna and I have become great friends, we have so much in common, our love of music, being mums and dancing our asses off,” the British singer said.

“I’m super excited to be collaborating on Girl, it’s a banger!”

The pair previewed the “sisterhood anthem” live at a London club in November last year ahead of its release just in time for Lunoe’s Mardi Gras at the Heaps Gay party.

Fellow dance music stars and fans had a huge reaction to the banger when it dropped on Friday morning.

Sneaky Sound System’s Angus McDonald commented “Wow, this is exciting, seriously!” while dance artist Alison Wonderland declared “Ur my hero.”

Lunoe is one of our most celebrating dance music exports, playing in front of tens of thousands of fans at the huge American and European festivals. She opened for The Weeknd at his massive stadium shows here last year.

Music and her imminent television gig aren’t Mel C’s only down under links; she has been dating Aussie model Chris Dingwall since at least the middle of last year.

She mixed the business of her DJ tour here last April with pleasure, holidaying at the exclusive Qualia resort in the Whitsundays.

The pair went public with their relationship at Wimbledon in July after being snapped walking hand-in-hand at the Glastonbury festival.

Considering The Voice coaches have a habit of showcasing their own musical wares during the season, it is a good bet Mel C will perform Girl with Lunoe in the upcoming series.
