The organisers of the THIS THAT Festival are blaming “challenging economic conditions” for their decision to cancel the event for the second year running.
Organisers took to social media on Friday evening to announce this year’s festival, which was to be held on Saturday November 4 at Sandstone Point, Queensland, and on Saturday November 11 in Newcastle, New South Wales, was canned.
“This difficult decision was reached due to the challenging economic conditions we have been working within this past year,” reads the post on their official Instagram account, “and the many factors that have been impacted by this.”
“It has left us feeling that the THIS THAT experience you have come to know and love, and that we pride ourselves on offering, would only be dampened if we were to forge ahead.”
They said their ticketing partner Oztix will be contacting all ticket holders directly to commence refunds, automatically returned to the original card used for the purchase.
But would-be festvalgoers were not satisfied with simply a refund on their ticket, with many having already booked and paid for flights and accommodation.
“Who’s refunding our [accommodation],” reads one comment under the post.
“Can I get flight refunds from you guys too this is a bit of a joke,” reads another.
But others were supporting of the decision.
“Sending the Love,” one comment read.
“Massive loss for everyone involved,” said another supporter.
More than 30 alternative and EDM artists were scheduled to perform, including Porter Robinson, Gang Of Youths, Peking Duk, Alice Ivy, Kinder, Alex Lahey, Hockey Dad, and Trophy Eyes.
The cancellation echoes last year’s decision, when THIS THAT was axed two months out from its dates in late October and early November in Queensland and NSW.
Organisers then also blamed “the current level of market saturation resulting in supply chain issues and labour shortages, difficult economic conditions including ballooning insurance premiums and infrastructure costs, and the forecast of ongoing extreme weather patterns.”
Earl Sweatshirt, Flight Facilities, Vera Blue, Skegss, and more were part of the 2022 line-up.
