Jessica Simpson has laughed off an awkward encounter with a fan in an LA parking lot - who mistook her for Britney Spears.

Jessica Simpson has detailed an awkward encounter in a parking lot over the weekend when a fan mistook her for Britney Spears.
On Sunday, the 43-year-old singer and fashion mogul revealed she was approached by a fan outside a mall in LA who asked her for an autograph. Only problem was the fan thought Simpson was Spears.
The exchange was made even more awkward as Simpson’s 11-year-old daughter Maxwell as there to witness it all unfold.
“The face when someone in the parking lot at the mall asks you for your autograph, but expects you to sign it Britney Spears,” Simpson captioned an Instagram photo of herself and Maxwell, with exaggerating shocked faces after the hilarious run-in.
It’s easy to see why the fan mistook Simpson for the Toxic singer – not only are they both Southern and have blonde hair and dark brown eyes, but both women rose to fame around the same time and have appeared to lead almost parallel lives.
They both dated major pop stars – Simpson dated and was briefly married to 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey and Spears dated N*Sync star Justin Timberlake in the late ‘90s.
After both doing childhood stints on the Mickey Mouse Club, they then went on to have their own reality TV shows – Simpson starred on MTV’s Newlyweds with Lachey, and Spears was in UPN’s Britney and Kevin: Chaotic with now ex-husband Kevin Federline.
The resemblance is also clear to Spears. In a December 2022 Instagram post, she told her followers she thought she looked like Simpson.
“Why do I look EXACTLY like Jessica Simpson ??? Also my face looks so pale!!!” she wrote alongside a throwback photo of herself.
The pair may be able to laugh off comparisons now, but when they were rising stars in the late 90s, they were unfairly pitted against each other along with fellow pop star Christina Aguilera.
“We grew up in a very competitive environment when it came to our record labels and being pushed to do things that were unnecessary for success,” Simpson told Entertainment Tonight in 2020.
Despite the rumoured rivalries, Simpson says they are all very supportive of one another.
“I think everybody’s careers have their own unique stories, and I love that Britney owns herself, Christina owns herself, and they don’t let the world control them,” she said.
“They just are themselves, and that’s who I am as well. Everybody has found their own way, in such a beautiful, inspiring way. I just love it that everybody has remained authentically who they are.”
Simpson went on to marry former NFL player Eric Johnson in 2014, eight years after her divorce from Lachey. They welcomed daughter Maxwell in 2012 and son Ace in 2013.
