Ginuwine pays tribute to his baby-making anthem Pony which is back in the charts thanks to Magic Mike

THE sensual R&B jam song Pony made Ginuwine a global chart star in 1996 — and thanks to the Magic Mike films it has kept him in the business ever since.

IT has been declared one of the biggest baby-making songs of all time and now Pony has finally brought American R&B star to Australia for his first tour.

The smooth singer has been riding high in the top 40 again with the 1996 megahit thanks to its prominent use in the Magic Mike films.

Far from sneering at the steamy song’s success, Ginuwine said he was grateful it had proven to be a timeless seducer.

“It came out in 1996 and people still feel it. R&B touches your heart ... and if you want to make love, you want to put on some Marvin Gaye, some Barry White or Luther (Vandross) or maybe my songs,” he said.

“I think it was successful because it was more sensual, more sexy and in tune with what people were into then. I never wanted to be flavour of the month.”

While he has maintained his career for the past two decades with a succession of albums and a handful of acting roles, it has been the use of Ginuwine’s music and name in film and television which has found him a new generation of fans.

He was namechecked and appeared in the hit comedy series Parks and Recreation as well as Pony starring as the soundtrack in those sizzling Magic Mike scenes.

“I’ve watched the scenes in the movies but not the whole thing because it’s a woman’s movie, it’s not a guy movie. I loved what (Channing Tatum) did to the song,” he said.

“I would say yes to a role in the next one.”

Ginuwine acknowledged that his club dates in Australia, including the RNB Superclub at Marquee on Sunday, would be in front of audiences who may have been conceived to the song.

He is intrigued to discover whether his latest ode to lovemaking, Leave It In, will have the same impact.

“Right now I don’t know where I fit in as far as new music goes and Leave It In is still a sensual type of song but it’s not in your face. Like Pony, you know what I am talking about,” he said.
