SOMETIMES it isn’t easy to give things away as Dami Im discovered when the X Factor star hit the streets to stage some random acts of kindness.

HOW tough is it to give away a flower?

X Factor winner Dami Im found out some people won’t easily accept a freebie when she staged some random acts of kindness throughout Sydney last week.

The sweet-natured Alive singer surprised people with flowers, balloons, coffees and a song or two in a shopping mall, nursing home and childcare centre, with many of the recipients only recognising the singer as she walked away.

Instead of filming a conventional music video for her upcoming single Smile, the bubbly entertainer decided to brighten the day of fans and strangers with small gestures of goodwill.

It proved to be an intriguing social experiment for the singer and her targets.

“Sometimes I can get quite serious so I wanted to do something light-hearted to make people happy with a day of doing random things,” she said.

While Im is at home on the stage, she is chronically shy meeting strangers which can make her pop star day job difficult at times.

“I am terrified of meeting strangers but I pushed myself to do it and it was such a fantastic day,” she said.

Many of the subjects of her pay-it-forward campaign didn’t recognise the chart-topper, while others were quick to ask for a photo after she presented them with their surprise flower.

“There were a lot of people asking why I was giving out flowers before they would take them and I heard a lot of people saying ‘Is that Dami?’ as they walked off,” she said.

“It was just great to see people’s faces light up in surprise.

The littlest recipients of her kindness at a childcare centre had no clue as to the identity of the beautiful pop star who read them a story.

The dogs she volunteered to walk were also oblivious to her fame.

But she was a big hit at a nursing home as she sang and danced with the residents.

Im hopes her #MakeYouSmile campaign will prove to be as infectious as the single she recorded in Sweden with songwriting collective The Kennel.

“You can get angry just driving the car these days so I just wanted to spread a message about how easy it can be to make someone happy,” she said.

Smile is released on Friday and its retro 60s girl group sound should connect with fans of Meghan Trainor’s hits.
