Adam Levine has apologised to fans amid heavy backlash over an apparently lacklustre Maroon 5 performance in Chile.

Fans in South America flocked to social media to voice their displeasure with the band’s set at the Viña del Mar festival, as well as Levine’s alleged attitude towards the proceedings.

“To be totally frank there were some things holding me back last night and I let them get to me,” Levine explained via Instagram Story. “And it impacted how I was behaving onstage, which is unprofessional and I apologise for that.”

Levine and the other 4 Maroons were at least 15 late minutes for their set, causing TV presenters Maria Luisa Godoy and Martin Càracamo to — in a turn of phrase that would make Pablo Neruda proud — “fill in for minutes that became eternal for those present,” per Chilean outlet CHV News.

Adding fuel to the fire, Levine decided to respond to the audience’s initial efforts to sing along by quipping, “Well, if you want to do my job, go ahead.”

Chilean actress and singer Denise Rosenthal, also part of the festival line-up, claimed that Levine requested no one look in him the face — or, failing that, that mere mortals turn to face the wall while in his presence — in a now-deleted tweet.

In his apology, a suitably chastened Levine went on to refer to Vina del Mar as a “prestigious, amazing” event and noted that Friday — when the band resumes their South American tour — they will “completely destroy,” which he presumably meant as a good thing.

“Last night wasn’t our best and for that all I can say is I’m really sorry,” he finished.
