Daniel Andrews famous “get on the beers” speech up for top songwriting prize

Australia’s top songwriters, including the Kid Laroi, Vance Joy, Amy Shark, Rob Hirst and Genesis Owusu, are up for APRA Awards. So is Dan Andrews.

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews is the most unlikely candidate for one of Australia’s top songwriters’ prizes.

The viral smash Get On The Beers by dance producers Mashd N Kutcher has been nominated for the Most Performed Dance/Electronic Work at the 2022 APRA Music Awards which recognises Australia’s songwriters.

The song, which has more than 15 million streams samples Andrews from one of his early Covid press conferences in March 2020 when he warned Victorians not to “have all your mates around to your house to get on the beers” when pubs were shut down by the pandemic.

Andrews has been invited to the awards in Melbourne on May 3 but has a clash with the Victorian budget released that night.

The Kid Laroi leads the nominees for the 2022 APRAs with four nominations, including his

global two-billion stream smash Stay leads this year’s nominations for Song of the Year.

The 18-year-old’s megahit with his mate Justin Bieber joins Midnight Oil’s First Nation (featuring Jess Mauboy and rapper Tasman Keith), Grammy nominee Hiatus Kaiyote’s Red Room, punk band Amyl and The Sniffer’s Guided By Angels and The Other Black Dog by multi-award winner Genesis Owusu up for the peer-voted award.

Just days after he packed on the PDA with Tik Tok personality girlfriend Katarina Deme on the Grammys red carpet, the LA-based pop star explained his writing process for the hit in typical teen fashion.

“All my music is just taken from stuff around me, my experiences and stuff like that and I guess that one was just, girl shit,” he said.

Owusu said he drew inspiration from the mental health battles of loved ones for The Other Black Dog in an attempt to break down the taboo around speaking out about anxiety and depression.

First Nation songwriter Rob Hirst said the song he co-wrote with rapper Tasman Keith is a mission statement for reconciliation with Australia’s Indigenous community.

“There’s two nations going on here. What we’ve got to do to get to a point of complete

reconciliation is we’ve got to understand that the ancient nation of the first Australians is

waiting for us to collaborate with them and fit in with this extraordinary culture that they’ve

provided,” Hirst said.

The Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year nominations are split between artists and producers who have made a quantum leap in their pop careers in the past year.

Genesis Owusu – who landed on former US President Barack Obama’s playlist – is nominated with First Nations r&b pop artist Budjerah and electronic pop sensation Sycco.

Rapper Masked Wolf and his producer Tyron Hapi are also in there alongside global hit maker Khaled Rohaim who has enjoyed phenomenal success with his work on The Kid Laroi and Doja Cat songs.

While Song of the Year is voted by more than 2500 of APRA’s songwriter members, the Most Performed categories are decided by broadcast data.

The leading nominees include Laroi (four nominations including Most Performed Australian Work), Vance Joy with three nominations, with Amy Shark, Guy Sebastian and Tones and I.

The 2022 APRA Music Awards will be at the Melbourne Town Hall on May 3.
