Tom Cruise ‘carries this intensity I’ve never felt before’

SBS TV host Marc Fennell has revealed what Tom Cruise is really like after he met the megastar face-to-face for an exclusive chat.

SBS personality Marc Fennell has revealed what the world’s biggest movie star, Tom Cruise, is really like.

Fennell met Cruise for a one-on-one chat to promote his latest movie American Made, and The Feed co-host told news.com.au that he was banned from asking the actor about one topic in particular.

“His camp basically said he didn’t want to talk about his faith and, on reflection, I respected that, as I would with anyone who don’t wanna talk about their beliefs in public,” Fennell said.

So what’s it like to sit down with the most talked about star on the planet?

“Face-to-face he’s very, very intense,” Fennell said.

“Like, he’s totally friendly but he just carries this intensity that I’ve never felt before. My experience with most movie stars is that they all end up being very normal once you get into a conversation with them. Tom Cruise has a totally different energy.”

You’d expect a star of Cruise’s calibre to rock up to an interview with an army of assistants, makeup artists and bodyguards, but that wasn’t the case according to Fennell.

“He travels with almost no handlers in the room and there was no one really keeping time during the interview,” the TV host said.

“We were scheduled a certain amount of time and Tom just wanted to keep talking.”

In the wideranging conversation, Cruise opened up to Fennell about how a haircut almost got him fired from his first ever movie and explained how his acting process differs from that of most other actors.

“I think the thing that surprised me most in the interview was how Tom basically rewrites anything he touches,” Fennell told news.com.au.

In the chat, Cruise explained: “Sometimes what I’ll do is I’ll come up with a character and then I’ll put it into a movie, but I’ll rewrite the whole script based on that.

“Edge of Tomorrow is a film that I made where, a couple of years before, I was kinda just thinking about this character and thinking about a style of film I wanted to do and basically I rewrote the script from page one and put that whole idea in there.”
