IF you love the original films in the iconic Terminator film franchise, James Cameron’s announcement about the next movie in the series should thrill you.

THE next instalment in the long-running Terminator series promises to be a return to form after 2015’s poorly received Terminator Genisys — and one more very familiar face has just come on board.

James Cameron, who directed the first two instalments of the franchise and is returning as a producer for the as-yet-untitled Terminator 6 film, announced that one of the series’ most iconic roles is making a return: Sarah Connor, played by actress Linda Hamilton.

Hamilton played Connor in the 1984 original Terminator film, then underwent a massive physical transformation when her character emerged as a Terminator-fighting action hero in the 1991 follow-up.

While Hamilton is now 60, Cameron argued that her age shouldn’t dampen her action hero credentials.

“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys,” he said, referring to the Liam Neesons and Sylvester Stallones of the film world.

“But there isn’t an example of that for women,” he continued.

“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return.”

Fans will have to wait until 2019 to see Hamilton return to her iconic role — that’s how long Cameron has had to wait to reacquire the rights to the film series, having had no involvement in the past three films. The Avatar and Titanic director has assembled a dream team for the new instalment in the series: Deadpool director Tim Miller will direct, while Arnold Schwarzenegger, now 70, while reprise his iconic action hero role.

Cameron and Hamilton entered into a two-year marriage in 1997 that ended with a massive $US50 million divorce settlement for Hamilton. Should be lots to talk about on set, then.
