Deadpool 3, Wicked, The Fall Guy: Huge movie trailers premiere at Super Bowl

There’s sport and there’s plenty of Taylor Swift-watching – but the Super Bowl’s also featured the debut of a slate of blockbuster trailers.

Trailer for Wicked premieres at Super Bowl

The 2024 Super Bowl isn’t just about the sports and Taylor Swift-watching.

The Kansas City Chiefs are taking on the San Francisco 49ers, with Usher performing the halftime show.

But Hollywood studios have also dropped megabucks to secure extremely coveted (and expensive) ad space during the big event, releasing trailers for some of the most highly-anticipated films of the year to millions.

Here are some of the highlights:

Deadpool & Wolverine

The long-awaited third Deadpool film sees Ryan Reynolds team up with his faux-real-life nemesis Hugh Jackman, and fans were treated to a glimpse of what’s to come in the Super Bowl trailer.

Reynolds, who has played mercenary Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, in the films since 2016, shared the trailer for the latest instalment.

“Welcome to the mercury in retrograde of Marvel Phases. #DeadpoolWolverine,” Reynolds wrote on social media.

Jackman then swiftly took the opportunity to take another swipe in their long-running “feud”, sharing a post of his own on X.

Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in Australia on July 25.

Wicked

The first footage of the big-screen adaptation of the Wicked musical shows Ariana Grande as Glinda, the Good Witch and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba.

Wicked will be a two-part adaptation of the award-winning Broadway show, with Part One slated for release on November 28, and Part Two coming a year later.

The Fall Guy

The Fall Guy was shot in Australia – and it was certainly hard to miss.

In late 2022 and early 2023, Hollywood megastar Ryan Gosling was seen filming his high-octane stunts all over town, while the Harbour Bridge was even shut down for several days of production.

The adaptation of an ‘80s TV series follows retired film stuntman Colt Seavers (Gosling), who is lured back to work for a mega-budget studio movie which is being directed by his ex-girlfriend, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt).

We’ll soon be able to see the final result of the dramatic production – and based on what’s been released so far, it may well have been worth it.

The Fall Guy is out April 24.

A Quiet Place: Day One

The sci-fi thriller prequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place, which starred Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, goes right back to the day that sound-triggered aliens invaded Earth, prompting the events of the original film.

The terrifying new story unfolds in New York City, starring Lupita Nyong’o and Djimon Hounsou, as well as Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn.

A Quiet Place: Day One allows viewers to “experience the day the world went quiet”, and is set for release in Australia on June 27.

Despicable Me 4

Get set for more Despicable behaviour.

The fourth instalment of the wildly popular Despicable Me series sees Gru (Steve Carell) and his wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) navigating their new life as they welcome their own child into their adopted family – which includes plenty of millions – while taking on a new nemesis.

It’ll hit cinemas on June 20.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

The blockbuster Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was also previewed during the Super Bowl, more than six years on from the release of its predecessor, War for the Planet of the Apes.

The movie is set “several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows,” according to its synopsis.

“As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will premiere on May 9.
