An upcoming horror movie that depicts “deplorables” being stalked and shot by elite liberals has been pulled from screens.
Starring Hilary Swank, The Hunt is the latest horror flick from producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse that follows a group of people — who seem to be modelled on Make America Great Again supporters — who have been kidnapped and are now being hunted down for sport.
Over a weekend in which the US was rocked by two mass shootings, sports cable channel ESPN pulled all advertising for The Hunt.
An ESPN source has since told The Hollywood Reporter no trailers for the horror satire, which was originally called Red State Vs. Blue State, will appear on the channel ahead of its September 27 US release date.
A Universal spokesman confirmed to Fox News that the marketing campaign for The Hunt had been put on temporary hold.
“Out of sensitivity to the attention on the country’s recent shooting tragedies, Universal Pictures and the filmmakers of The Hunt have temporarily paused its marketing campaign and are reviewing materials as we move forward,” the statement read.
Universal insiders also told THR the studio was rethinking its promotional plans for the movie in what one source described as a “fluid situation”.
Prior to the two shootings, reshoots had been done based on a rough cut of the film.
The Hunt proved controversial even before Universal acquired the rights to it in May last year.
An executive at another studio told THR he didn’t even read the script but “the idea seemed crazy”.
An unnamed filmmaker with ties to Universal also said: “Employees in different departments were questioning the wisdom of making such a movie in these times.
“In light of the horrific (recent shootings), is this not the most craven, irresponsible, dangerous exploitation?”
Last Saturday gunman Patrick Crusius opened fire in a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 people.
Just a day later Connor Betts entered a bar in Dayton, Ohio, and shot at patrons, killing nine people.
