Rachel McAdams is so comfortable with her body, she didn’t want editors to retouch it during a recent photo shoot.

The actress, 44, asked Bustle magazine to do minimal editing on her photos – even wanting her armpit hair be left untouched in one of the images.

In the accompanying interview, McAdams also stressed the importance on having a good relationship with your body and showcasing its real appearance.

“I love that juxtaposition of beauty, glam, fantasy, and then truth,” she said in the magazine’s April issue.

“With this shoot, I’m wearing latex underwear. But I’ve had two children. This is my body, and I think that’s so important to reflect back out to the world. It’s OK to look your best and work at it and be healthy, but that’s different for everyone.”

McAdams – who stars in the upcoming film adaptation of the Judy Blume novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret – also shared some “words of wisdom for my pre-teen self” about shaving.

“Life is long, shaving is intense. But if you’re going to go ahead with it anyway, watch the ankle bones, the shins … Always have shaving cream,” she said in a video shared on Bustle’s YouTube.

“If you want to stop shaving again one day, that’s OK too,” she added.

McAdams is not afraid to go against the grain.

In the mid-2010s, at the height of her acting career, she took a step back for two years to start a family with longtime boyfriend Jamie Linden. The couple are now parents to a son and daughter, whose names they’ve kept secret.

Of her career, the actress said she felt “guilty” for not “capitalising” on the opportunities thrown her way – she passed on roles such as The Devil Wears Prada, Casino Royale and Iron Man.

“I knew I was in such a lucky spot. But I also knew it wasn’t quite jiving with my personality and what I needed to stay sane,” she said.

However, she doesn’t regret following her gut because it made her feel more “empowered”.

“It helped me feel like I was taking back some control. And I think it sort of allowed me to come in from a different doorway,” she said.
