Warning: Mad About The Boy spoilers ahead

A previously unseen – and hilarious – scene from the latest Bridget Jones film has been released, after originally landing on the cutting room floor.

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy was released last month to critical acclaim, and focuses on Bridget’s life several years on from the events of the last instalment, Bridget Jones’s Baby, in which she and Mark Darcy become parents.

In the fourth movie, a heartbroken Bridget (Renée Zellweger) is now a widow with two kids following the death of Mark (Colin Firth) and is reluctantly facing the prospect of re-entering the dating world.

The deleted scene, a bonus feature shared by the studio in honour of the digital release of Mad About The Boy, shows Bridget catching up with overbearing school mum and one-time arch rival Nicolette (Leila Farzad) over cocktails, both visibly drunk and slurring.

“I used to run a multinational company and now I run the bloody cake sale and the second-hand uniform store!” Nicolette tells Bridget.

“You’ve got everything, Bridget. You’ve got your career, your family … your frankly unbelievable toy boy.”

Referencing her on-screen, much-younger boyfriend, Roxster, a sad Bridget tells her: “No, not anymore – he dumped me. Because I haven’t got a time machine.”

The pair then spot out the window the uptight teacher Mr Wallaker (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), who has been ruffling parents’ feathers at their kids’ school, and are seen hilariously hiding behind their menu in a bid to avoid him.

It comes after Hugh Grant opened up about an entire deleted storyline from the third movie, which would have seen him play a much bigger role.

Grant as Daniel Cleaver has been a central character throughout the franchise.

In Bridget Jones’s Baby, released in 2016, he appeared only in picture form in two newspaper articles.

The plot that made it to screens shows Bridget, having split from her boyfriend, Mark, falling pregnant in a brief reunion – which occurred shortly after a one-night stand with dashing American businessman, Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey).

Dempsey (as Jack) and Firth (as Mark) starred alongside Zellweger in the third film.

Unsurprisingly, it leads to plenty of confusion over who the father might be.

Dempsey’s introduction to the story was welcomed by fans, but if the original story had gone ahead, it would have been Bridget’s on-and-off lover and sparring partner, playboy Daniel Cleaver, who was in his position.

But as Grant told SiriusXM recently, he had to pull out of the film after “months” of “agonies”.

“That was when [Bridget] has a baby, and it had a great set up that she’s pregnant and doesn’t know whether it’s Darcy’s baby or Daniel’s baby. That was marvellous,” Grant told Radio Andy.

“But I could never work out how Daniel would handle either being the father or not being a father. Couldn’t make him work. And we went through agonies, months and months, and in the end, I said, ‘I think I’d better sit this one out.’ So I did. And they made a wonderful film anyway.”

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy is available exclusively on digital platforms to buy or rent, starting April 1st, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
