The director of the upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux has revealed a first look at Joaquin Phoenix as he returns in his role as the comic book villain.

“Day 1. Our boy. #joker,” wrote Todd Phillips in a simple caption of Phoenix having a shave in an Instagram post on Saturday.

Not much is known about the film, with the plot being kept closely under wraps. It is known, however, that Phoenix will reprise his role as the disturbed Arthur Fleck, better known as the Joker, New York Post reports.

The 48-year-old will be joined by Lady Gaga who reportedly plays villain Harley Quinn.

Irish actor Brendan Gleeson is also rumoured to be in the cast, in an unknown role.

In the comic books, Quinn was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, where she met and became romantically involved with Joker, with the pair then wreaking havoc on Gotham. The first Joker movie ended with Fleck inside Arkham, but on the verge of escape.

The original film scored 11 Oscar nominations.
