Bryce Dallas Howard has revealed she was paid “so much less” than her co-star Chris Pratt for the Jurassic World trilogy.

In 2018, Variety reported that Howard was paid $US8 million compared to Pratt’s $US10 million for the second film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom despite their co-lead status on the films. Howard has now clarified to Insider that the gap was much larger than reported.

“The reports were so interesting because I was paid so much less than the reports even said, so much less,” Howard told Insider.

“When I started negotiating for Jurassic, it was 2014 and it was a different world, and I was at a great disadvantage. And, unfortunately, you have to sign up for three movies and so your deals are set.”

Howard said that when she discussed the pay gap with Pratt, he championed equity on her behalf when it came to the films’ ancillary projects, such as associated games or theme park rides where the actors are used to voice or play their characters.

Howard explained to Insider, “Whenever there was an opportunity to move the needle on stuff that hadn’t already been negotiated, like a game or a ride, he literally told me, ‘You guys don’t even have to do anything. I’m gonna do all the negotiating. We’re gonna be paid the same and you don’t have to think about this, Bryce’.”

Howard then revealed that those sideline projects have been more lucrative than the main game.

“I’ve been paid more for those kinds of things than I ever was for the movie,” she said.

The gender pay gap is alive and well in the entertainment industry with female co-stars frequently paid less than their male counterparts, even if they have equal or sometimes higher billing.

Claire Foy was famously paid less than Matt Smith for their two seasons of The Crown, despite her having the lead role.

Foy told PorterEdit that she was deeply hurt when she found out. “I’d been working on that show for two years. I loved everybody on it. And then I realised there’s been a big, fat, dirty secret that nobody’s ever talked about.”

When it the discrepancy became public, Foy was given £200,000 in back pay. The series producers also pledged no actor playing Queen Elizabeth would be paid less than her co-stars in future seasons.

The case of Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg was also in the headlines for their work on reshoots for All the Money in the World. Williams agreed to do the work for a $US1000 per diem while Wahlberg was paid $US1.5 million.

Four-time Oscar nominee Williams had the larger role in the film, which required reshoots to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer in the role of J. Paul Getty.

Following public outcry, Wahlberg agreed to donate his salary to the Time’s Up organisation while his agency WME kicked in an additional $US500,000.

The Sony emails hack in 2014 had a bevy of disclosures including that Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were both paid less than their male co-stars Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner and Bradley Cooper on American Hustle.

Julie Deply has previously said for the Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight trilogy, she was paid 10 per cent of Ethan Hawke’s salary on the first film, half of his on the second and only equal on the third.

Variety’s 2022 actors salary report revealed that only two women – Margot Robbie and Millie Bobbie Brown – were in the top 20 highest paid actors for movie roles.
