LOCAL musicians lead the latest rollcall of more than 30 artists signed on to play free shows in the streets and venues of Broadbeach following the Commonwealth Games.

Northern NSW roots rocker Ash Grunwald, folk duo Hat Fitz and Cara and the James Southwell Band top the second wave of acts locked in to play free shows on the Gold Coast from May 17-20 as part of this year’s Blues on Broadbeach music festival.

Presented by Broadbeach Alliance, last year’s event brought more than 160,000 people into the beachside precinct to enjoy blues, folk, soul, roots and rock tunes — delivering a $20 million boost to the local economy.

Revered live double act Hat Fitz and Cara will up the ante for their festival appearance this year when they play a special one-off set with the Brisbane City Gospel Choir.

The collaboration was the brainchild of festival director Mark Duckworth.

After noticing the work Hat Fitz and Cara were doing with community choirs around the world, Mr Duckworth suggested they team up with the 14-member Brisbane City Gospel Choir (who wowed crowds when they played the festival’s main stage a couple of years ago).
