Married At First Sight’s Melissa’s horny antics shouldn’t be laughed off

The horny mum on MAFS has been kicked off the show but there’s a sad reason that no one should be laughing.

Melissa’s MAFS reign ended last night because she was too much of a sex pest, and we can’t afford to laugh off her behaviour.

If we wouldn’t accept this behaviour from a man, then we shouldn’t accept it from a woman.

When Melissa burst onto our screens, she quickly became the joke of the season. The horny mum that had no boundaries and mentioned sex at the same rapid rate a divorced dad mentions the cost of child support.

In the beginning, it was a little bit funny, like when your Aunty gets drunk at Christmas and starts telling everyone about how her ex-husband never made her orgasm, but it quickly became grim.

Sex positive, Melissa was paired up with Josh, and instantly her obsession with sex became problematic.

She was so desperate to get freaky that she didn’t consider her partner’s feelings at all.

She’d complain about the lack of sex in their very new relationship.

She accused him of having “intimacy” issues and berated him for not cuddling her at night.

At one point she accused him of not being man enough to keep up with her sexually.

“What, you can’t keep up? Does it de-man you?” she shouted at him.

In response, Josh became defeated, confused and withdrawn.

Melissa would be prattling on about being a “freak in the sheets,” and needing a guy with a “big hammer,” while Josh would be trying to form an emotional connection with her.

It was a mess.

Interestingly, Melissa’s antics didn’t ignite an extensive conversation about consent within a relationship, but rather she just became a joke. She was the silly middle-aged woman obsessed with sex – ha, ha, ha.

Melissa’s behaviour shouldn’t be turned into a punchline though it should be seen as wrong. This season we’ve seen groom Harrison being called out for a gaslighting his wife, Bronte.

He has been ruthlessly criticised on the internet, and his behaviour has been really examined and it has started lots of worthy conversations about gaslighting in romantic relationships.

Melissa’s behaviour hasn’t been given the same treatment. Sure, people recognise her behaviour isn’t “normal”, but there’s a lack of outrage surrounding her actions.

I think if a man on Married at First Sight called himself a “freak in the sheets,” while demanding more sex from his new wife, people would rightfully be demanding to know why Nine even let this guy on the show.

It wouldn’t be seen as a salacious plot point if it was a man treating a woman this way.

I’d say the lack of reaction comes from the fact that Melissa is a woman.

She doesn’t come across as classically intimidating. She wears pretty dresses and seems like someone that would really enjoy a wine meme but that doesn’t mean her pressuring Josh wouldn’t have been scary for him.

When she was finally kicked off the show last night, Josh was very frank about the impact her behaviour had on him, he said: “There is a significant issue in this relationship about control.”

Josh went on to explain Melissa’s controlling behaviour, “In this relationship, Melissa has attempted to restrict my access to the TV.

“She’s attempted to restrict my access to the mobile phone. She’s tried to place limitations on the times I can read my books. She’s tried to tell me when I can go out, where I can go out, who I talk to, when I talk to them, “ he explained.

Melissa’s not simply a horny mum that loves sex. She’s someone that is prepared to bulldoze past her partner’s boundaries at every turn, and that kind of behaviour shouldn’t be laughed off, it should be called out, denounced and shouldn’t even be acceptable in the silly world of reality television. No woman deserves a free pass.
