Margot Robbie is being tipped to star in the ‘wild and orgasmic’ anti-woke reboot of the 1990s movie smash hit Basic Instinct but she might not have things all her own way.
Robbie is the favourite to play the role in the remake which may again feature protagonist Catherine Tramell, made famous, or infamous by Sharon Stone in the murder mystery released in March of 1992 and made $US353m ($541m) from a budget of $US49m.
According to Variety, Amazon MGM Studios have bought the rights to the as yet untitled relaunch of the iconic 90s flick, which is considered Stone’s greatest role.
The original film’s writer Joe Eszterhas will return to pen the reboot. It is not known how closely the reboot will mirror the original which followed the tale of serial killer Tramell’s affair with homicide detective Nick Curran, played by Michael Douglas.
“To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumours of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist,” Esztherhas said in a statement to the Wrap.
“I call my writing partner the TWISTED LITTLE MAN and he lives somewhere deep inside me.
“He was born 29 and he will die 29 and he tells me he is ‘sky high up’ to write this piece and provide viewers with a wild and orgasmic ride. That makes me very happy.”
Given Robbie’s undoubted blockbuster appeal., Aussie actress Robbie is well and truly in the running to play the lead role.
However Sydney Sweeney and Florence Pugh also set to be a chance to play the lead role.
The makers of the reboot will be hoping it avoids the failures of Basic Instinct 2, which was released in 2006 but bombed out as a both a commercial and critical failure.
The original was the fourth highest grossing film of 1992, was nominated for two Academy Awards and Tramell has since been regarded as one of the greatest villains in movie history.
