DC Comics Aquaman coming to Gold Coast with Jason Momoa, Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe

AS shooting for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor draws to a close, a new super hero — Aquaman, aka Hawaiian Jason Momoa — is coming to the Gold Coast.

AS shooting for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor draws to a close, a new super hero – Aquaman – is coming to the Gold Coast.

Meet your new friendly lifesaver with a twist – Aquaman, the King of the Seven Seas, aka Hawaiian actor and adventurer Jason Momoa.

Moma, best known for his roles as war lord Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and Ronon Dex in Stargate: Atlantis, will join Aussie director James Wan (Furious Seven, The Conjuring) and co-stars Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe on the Coast for his character’s stand-alone DC Comics action sci-fi adventure.

Aquaman will go into pre-production on the lot at Village Roadshow Studios later this month once crew members finish dismantling the epic sets used for Marvel’s rival comic/film blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok.

Aquaman casts the towering 1.93m, 37-year-old Momoa as the King of Atlantis alongside Heard (Zombieland) as Mera, with Dafoe (Spiderman) as Atlantean politician Nuidis Vulko.

While he looks like a barbarian, Momoa is anything but.

The Guinness-chugging, skateboarding, rock and ice-climbing, mountain biking, snowboarding, heavy metal music-loving globetrotter and student of Buddhism has been married to Lilakoi Moon, aka former The Cosby Show star Lisa Bonet, since 2007.

The couple, who met in 2005, have two children together, daughter Lola Iolani Momoa and son Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa.

Moon also has an adult daughter, actress Zoe Kravitz, with former husband, rocker turned actor Lenny Kravitz

Momoa’s family are expected to join him on the Coast when cameras begin rolling on Aquaman early in the new year

The move is due for release in cinemas in July 2018 and will be distributed by Warner Bros.

Fans – including Aquaman director Wan – were thrilled when Justice League director Zack Snyder cast Momoa as the sea-dwelling superhero in the DC Comics film series.

“I actually think it’s a brilliant move on Zack (Snyder) and co. to cast someone like Jason,” Wan told gaming and entertainment website IGN.

“Immediately, the whole joke aspect of Aquaman goes out the window.

“You have such a muscular, superhero-y character and one that is almost, to me, in some ways ... I look at him, he’s kind of the Wolverine in some respect.”

Momoa recently wrapped filming Justice League, which marks the big-screen debut of an unprecedented league of heroes —– Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman, Cyborg (Ezra Miller) and The Flash (Ray Fisher).

“(Aquaman is) the outsider who gets pulled into this world and he kind of doesn’t want to belong and he was doing his own thing,” Wan told IGN.

“And he prided freedom above everything else. That kind of plays nicely into who his character is. He’s like a reluctant superhero, right? He’s the reluctant king, basically, or would-be king.”

Wan is expected to draw inspiration from Geoff Johns’ 26-issue Aquaman comic series for the film.

“I really think he (Johns) took this character that had become the joke of the superhero world and made him frickin’ cool again,” Wan told IGN.

Black Manta, the supervillain character Aquaman battles during Johns’ 2001-2003 comic series, is rumoured to be the bad guy in Wan’s film.

The film’s writers include director Wan, Johns, Will Beal, Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger.

Bill Brzeski, best known for his work on Iron Man 3, will be production designer.

Joel Kramer, whose recent credits include Furious 7, will serve as second unit/assistant director and stunt co-ordinator.
