The team behind a family-run wedding venue dubbed a hidden Hinterland gem has revealed a new million-dollar renovation as part of its 20-year anniversary.

Coolibah Downs Private Estate co-director Alina Zhao spoke to the Bulletin about a series of upgrades that have been years in the works.

Ms Zhao said the previous owners built the chapel themselves on the Mount Nathan estate and she wanted to maintain the essence of the building.

“I worked with an architect to create everything, but I didn’t want to change the essence of what [the chapel] signifies.

“[The previous owners] built this beautiful piece of architecture, and we kind of essentially designed it around that, and added some of our personal influences to that as well,” she said.

The renovations include accommodation and kitchen upgrades as well as renovations to the bar and reception area.

“We renovated all the pathways we’ve got beautiful French style lighting, added a beautiful water fountain feature as well to create some more photo spots,” she said.

Ms Zhao said leaving a legacy was important to her and her family.

“I think for us, my family and I it’s the classic immigrant story, we’re Chinese, and I think we’re probably one of the only Asian-owned wedding venues in this space.

“We want to be able to represent different kinds of cultures coming together and I want to keep creating more of that and make that our lasting impact,” she said.

Ms Zhao also spoke about upcoming projects to upgrade the venue.

“We’ve got another $3 million project coming up where we’re going to be expanding the property,” she said.
