STRAP yourselves in and get ready to Ragnarok — Gold Coast style.
The first official trailer for Gold Coast-filmed Marvel blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok has been greeted by thunderous applause from fans and commentators.
The slick, CGI-heavy clip from award-winning director Taika Waititi gives fans a sneak peek at returning characters including God of Thunder Thor (Chris Hemsworth), his evil half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and reveals an impressive new look for Heimdall (Idris Elba).
Set to Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, the trailer also shows off new characters Hela (Cate Blanchett) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson).
The clip is fans’ first insight into how locations including Tamborine Mountain, Oxenford Quarry and the magnificent sets constructed on the lot at Village Roadshow Studios will be seen on the big screen.
Filmed on the Coast and in Brisbane from July through to October last year, Thor: Ragnarok will be released in Australian cinemas on October 27.
THE OUTDOOR ASGARD SET
Construction crew earned huge praise for their handiwork on the lot at Village Roadshow Studios, where they created several majestical buildings, huge forecourts and spaces complete with flowing water for scenes set on Asgard and neighbouring planets including Sakaar.
The trailer shows several sequences filmed on these outdoor sets at the Oxenford lot including a battle-ready Loki throwing knives and sporting his horned headdress.
THE OUTDOOR SAKAAR SET
Shots in the trailer show Thor stepping into new character The Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) arena for a gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger, the Incredible Hulk.
The action takes place on Planet Sakaar, the Grandmaster’s colourful abode.
In other sequences shot on the labyrinth of sets on the Village Roadshow Studios lot, the Norse goddess of death Hela (Blanchett) is shown standing before a legion of Asgardian warriors as she proclaims “Asgard is dead”.
THE TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN RAINFOREST SET
Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito said the entertainment giant chose southeast Queensland for the shoot because it “offers an amazing and diverse backdrop for Thor: Ragnarok”.
The trailer shows Idris Elba’s character, Heimdall, battling a mythical beast in one of those diverse settings — the lush green rainforest on Tamborine Mountain.
The Asgardian hero will reportedly enjoy a bigger role in this third stand-alone film in the Thor series.
THE OXENFORD QUARRY SET
The Asgardians touched down in a sci-fi wasteland at Oxenford Quarry in the final days of the Thor: Ragnarok shoot. Stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson followed the lead of director Taika Waititi on a tour around the set shot via Facebook Live.
The quarry, which is believed to have doubled as the planet Sakaar, was littered with space junk and hollowed out spaceship shells for the final days of the 18-week shoot.
THE BRISBANE CBD SET
For Tom Hiddleston, the days the production filmed on the streets of Brisbane are, as far as fan interaction goes, on equal footing with the first time the British actor hit San Diego Comic-Con as Loki.
“We shut down the central business district and it was insane — in the best way,” Hiddleston said.
“Everybody showed up to watch and between takes you could run over and say hello. People were so enthusiastic and patient and it made it feel like a real event.”
“Even Sir Anthony Hopkins said it made him feel like a rock star.”
Footage captured from the Brisbane shoot and featured in the trailer gives up a huge plot point. When Thor throws his Mjolinir (hammer), Hela (Blanchett) does the so-far impossible. She catches it. Cue oows and aahhhs! Thor’s in trouble.
