The bitter breakup between Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus is a step closer to being finalised, with a decision made over who will be granted custody of the couple’s animals.
Together, Cyrus and Hemsworth owned 15 pets — seven dogs, two horses, two mini horses, three cats and a pig.
A source has revealed that Cyrus will be granted “custody” of all pets and that Hemsworth will not contest it, according to TMZ.
“If Liam wanted to put up a fight, he could in California because there’s a new law that allows judges to determine which party is best suited to keep the pets,” a source told the gossip site.
“The judge puts a lot of weight on who cares for the animals. Judges even have the power to award joint custody of household pets.”
Earlier this week, Hemsworth, 29, filed for divorce from Cyrus, 26, after eight months of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences”.
‘I HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE’
As news of the divorce filing broke, Cyrus denied cheating on Hemsworth during their short-lived marriage in an explosive social media rant.
The Wrecking Ball singer tweeted about the scathing rumours which alleged she was unfaithful to Australian actor Hemsworth during their 8-month marriage.
“I can accept that the life I’ve chosen means I must live completely open and transparent with my fans who I love, and the public, 100% of the time,” Cyrus tweeted.
“What I cannot accept is being told I’m lying to cover up a crime I haven’t committed.
“I have nothing to hide.”
LIAM FILES FOR DIVORCE FROM MILEY
“I f**ked up and cheated in relationships when I was young,” she wrote. “But the truth is, once Liam & I reconciled, I meant it, & I was committed. There are NO secrets to uncover here. I’ve learned from every experience in my life. I’m not perfect, I don’t want to be, it’s boring. I’ve grown up in front of you, but the bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP.
“I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.”

LIAM FINALLY FILES FOR DIVORCE
The Australian actor filed a petition to end his marriage Syrus in a Los Angeles court, citing “irreconcilable differences”, and listing the former couple’s date of separation as simply “TBD”.
Hemsworth hired celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has previously represented Angelina Jolie, Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian, Ryan Reynolds and Britney Spears in their bitter breakups.
Hemworth’s move to formally end the marriage came eight months after he and Cyrus tied the knot in a secret ceremony in Nashville.
The ex-couple confirmed they had parted ways less than two weeks ago, with Cyrus’s representative telling People in a statement they had “agreed to separate at this time”.
Though it’s understood they split in June.
“Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers,” a joint statement from the couple said.
“They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart.”
HEMSWORTH’S NEXT MOVE REVEALED
Hemsworth wants to move back to Australia permanently after the marriage breakdown. Melbourne-born Hemsworth has returned Down Under with his family and now reportedly wants to make the move permanent.
Liam has been spending time with his brother Thor star Chris Hemsworth, 36, in Byron Bay as he comes to terms with the end of his eight-month marriage.
A source told Radar Online: “He’s taking a long break and heading back to Byron Bay to be with his brother and mates, do plenty of surfing and soul-searching. Then he’ll figure out his next move.
“He’ll still come to LA to do business and shoot movies, but this whole experience has really reinforced to Liam that Hollywood’s not for him in the long term.”
‘DEVASTATED’ LIAM CANCELS WORK
According to a source, Hemsworth and Cyrus grew apart and have different priorities in the wake of their marriage breakdown.
“Miley got back in the studio and was focused and serious about her new music,” a source told E! News.
“Liam was continuing to party with his friends. They used to party, but Miley outgrew that phase.”
Meanwhile, Fox News claimed Cyrus had wanted to repair the marriage but has since moved on with The Hills star, Kaitlynn Carter, who recently broke-up with her “husband”, Brody Jenner.
“Miley is very close with Kaitlynn. It’s romantic, but also a friendship,” a source told People. “They are both going through similar stuff right now and are bonding over it.”
The insider said that while Cyrus and Carter, 30, have bonded over their recent breakups, Cyrus “isn’t 100 per cent happy”.
“They had many happy days together in LA and now Liam is not around. It’s hard for her to be back in LA without him,” the source said. “This is not the situation that she wanted. She hoped they could figure things out.”
Unfortunately for Cyrus, a “humiliated” Hemsworth is said to be done with the marriage.
“Liam is sick of being humiliated. And the way she’s acting, she’s doing an excellent job of making sure he won’t go back,” a source said.
“As soon as they tied the knot, she went back to her old ways … partying.
“They might have been on and off in the past, but this time it’s really it.”
The breakup has also impacted on Hemsworth’s Hollywood comeback, as has cancelled promotional commitments for his latest movie, Killerman, after Cyrus released a jaw-dropping song about their marriage breakdown.
Hemsworth was due to attend a press junket and premiere of the indie action thriller in Los Angeles but has since pulled out.
The Hunger Games star is said to be “not in the right head space to step back into the limelight“, a source told the British press.
And Cyrus seemed to have taken cues from Taylor Swift and released an epic breakup song titled Slide Away, which includes not-so-subtle references to her marriage.
In Slide Away, Cyrus accused Hemsworth of partying and said the couple grew apart.
The lyrics include: “I want my house in the hills, don’t want the whisky and pills”.
“I don’t give up easily, but I don’t think I’m down. So won’t you slide away, back to the ocean, I’ll go back to the city life,” she sings.
HOW SHOCK SPLIT UNFOLDED
The release of Slide Away came less than a week after Cyrus and Hemsworth blamed their breakup on being “ever-evolving” and “changing as partners”.
Since then, a series of claims have emerged about what led to their relationship breakdown, with leaks from both sides.
According to TMZ, sources said drug use and infidelity were partly to blame, and Cyrus’ friends told TMZ she tried “valiantly” to save the marriage and couldn’t accept that Hemsworth was “drinking a lot”.
Hemsworth sources have strongly denied this claim, saying none of the reports were true, and that Cyrus’ infidelity partly led to the breakup.
“This is another attempt by Miley to distract from her infidelity and recent outrageous public behaviour,” a source close to Hemsworth told TMZ.
It comes as Cyrus’ sister Brandi spoke out, saying she supports her. “It’s not my business to talk about and it’s nothing anything of mine to tell. There’s nothing I can really say. I just, I’m here for her, obviously, and I’ve been spending a lot of time with her,” Brandi said on the latest episode of her “Your Favorite Thing” podcast.
“When she’s ready to talk about it or whatever, then she will.”
Brandi also seemed to allude to the couple’s breakup on Instagram while on a getaway with her.
“I’ve learned that life sometimes takes us through seasons when we cannot understand why things have to hurt so much, or be so hard,” she wrote on Tuesday, “but all we can do is trust that there is purpose in everything, even the darkness … and in time everything will make sense, and all of that purpose will be revealed when the time is right, and we will be stronger and better for it.”
Last week, Hemsworth broke his silence on the split and denied “false” quotes that had been attributed to him.
“This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalist or media outlets,” Hemsworth stated on Instagram.
“I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward.”
The explosive retaliation came after The Sun published new photos of a downcast Hemsworth in a Byron Bay cafe with a claim that he told a reporter from a British newspaper: “You don’t understand what it’s like. I don’t want to talk about it mate.”
But Hemsworth making any such statement. “Any reported quotes attributed to me are false,” Hemsworth said on Instagram.
He signed off the post — of a sunrise — with the words “Peace and Love.”
It came as leaks from sources close to Cyrus claimed the Nothing Breaks Like a Heart singer tried “for months” to save the eight-month marriage and suggested therapy.
“He didn’t come close to meeting her half way,” a source told the gossip site.
Cyrus has reportedly moved to a $US2.5 million ranch next to the couple’s former $US6.8 million home that burnt down during the Malibu fires.
‘HE INTRODUCED THEM’
Miley Cyrus has certainly not been keeping a low profile since the split.
Multiple sources told News Corp Australia the Malibu-based singer had a huge night out at a Hollywood hotspot with a group of girls as Hemsworth fled to Australia weeks before their breakup was made public.
Cyrus was with her close girlfriends at celebrity hotspot the Blind Dragon in West Hollywood, as Hemsworth jetted to Australia late last month.
At the Sunset Strip venue, Cyrus was said to have partied late into the night and refused to take photos with other club-goers.
Cyrus went on a post-split girls’ trip to Italy, where she is continuing to show serious PDA with her friend and possible new love interest, The Hills: New Beginnings reality TV star Kaitlynn Carter.
Their alleged hook-up is said to have been “no secret” to Carter’s ex, reality star Brody Jenner, who has known for “a couple of months” that the pair were spending time together and is “totally okay with it”, the New York Post reported.
“Brody is still friends with them. There’s no drama,” a source added.
Cyrus and Carter have “known each other for years” and Carter “knows Miley through him (Jenner). He introduced them.”
Jenner and Carter’s Hills co-star Brandon Thomas Lee today weighed into the rumoured romance, calling it “fake”.
“The whole thing just seems so fake to me. It’s just like why?,” Thomas said in an interview with E! News.
“They are obviously just messing with their two ex-husbands and they are all friends, so why?! It just seems so ridiculous to me.”
‘COMPLEX’ MARRIAGE
Cracks began to show in Hemsworth and Cyrus’ short-lived marriage after she gave a revealing interview with US Elle magazine, in which she described their relationship as “complex”.
“I think it’s very confusing to people that I’m married. But my relationship is unique,” Cyrus told Elle last month.
“And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it.”
The now-former couple announced their split last weekend after tying the knot in December last year.
“Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers,” a rep for the couple said in a statement.
“They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart.
“Please respect their process and privacy.”
