IT looked like Grinspoon’s “indefinite hiatus” was permanent until Cold Chisel invited them to get back together for their Australian tour.

IT has taken the might of Cold Chisel to convince Australian rockers Grinspoon to reunite two years after they declared they were taking an “indefinite hiatus”.
Chisel wanted the four men back on the stage to open at some of their One Night Stand run having enjoyed some landmark gigs with them during their 2009 comeback tour.
“We’ve done a couple of really memorable shows with Grinspoon,” Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes said.
“They played with us on our huge return show at Homebush Stadium in 2009
and they joined us for one show on the Light The Nitro tour in 2011 and that just happened to
be the biggest show of the tour.
“They’re a great band and a really good fit with Cold Chisel.”
But it is believed getting the band back together wasn’t as easy as Chisel asking them to do it.
Phil Jamieson, Pat Davern, Joe Hansen and Kristian Hopes called a halt to their 18-year career of recording and touring in December 2013.
Frontman Jamieson has continued to play solo gigs, Davern has set up a studio and other ventures in Byron Bay, Hansen also worked on other projects near his northern NSW home and Hopes has built a successful property business in Queensland.
He said at the time they were definitely not calling it quits but needed to reconnect with their families.
“Some people will be overjoyed and some people may be a bit sad about our decision but it’s not a definite full stop,” he said at the time.
But the longer the break went on, the more industry insiders believed it was unlikely the four men would give Grinspoon another crack.
“I honestly didn’t think Grinspoon would be playing together again, so to get this opportunity
by such a legendary act is humbling and completely out of the box insanely totally crazy fun.
Now, what the hell am I going to wear?” Jamieson quipped.
It seems the memories of those shows got them over the line despite the four men settled away from the stage.
“The show we played on the Light The Nitro tour was one of the
most memorable shows I have ever played in my life,” Jamieson recalled.
“Arm in arm, all of us — Pat, Joe, Kris and I. Singing at the top of our lungs to Flame Trees. Grinspoon have never been arm in arm before. It was a moment.
“I think I may have even fallen into a bush in my excitement.”
The reunion comes as Chisel add even more shows to their One Night Stand tour which will launch new record The Perfect Crime.
Making a mockery of the tour’s title, they will now play a third show at the Qantas Credit Union Arena on December 15 as part of the month-long farewell to the old Sydney Entertainment Centre before it is demolished.
They have also added a concert in Geraldton’s Eadon Clarke Oval on November 13, Adelaide Entertainment Centre on November 17 and Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on November 19.
