Gold Coasters share memories from at East Nightclub at Broadbeach

THE drunk, the funny, the stupid, the wild — it’s all happened at East. Here are a few stories from the past 10 years. And these are only the ones you’d tell the newspaper! Have you had a wild night at East?

IN 10 years, a lot has gone on within the walls of East. Many a photo taken in the mirror above the entrance stairs and many a patron fell down those same stairs. Many pashes have been had on the dancefloor and many bottles of expensive vodka downed in golden booths. Now it’s all over, all we have are the memories — the ones that weren’t wiped out by tequila, anyway. Here are a selection of your wildest, funniest and most memorable moments.

“I was lucky enough to hit East about 50 times — maybe more. I was at the opening night, I spent many New Year’s Eves there and often I just went there to have dinner with friends and family. But … the night I met Snoop Dogg would have to go down as one of the most frenetic nights ever. Meeting Snoop alongside your bestie — seriously could it have got better? My eyes were as wide as saucers when I met him. He had a deep, deep drawl … and his smell … it was rather interesting to say the least! I have a feeling he may have been indulging prior to his arrival at the club. Just watching him and his posse interact with some of the Gold Coast’s most beautiful women was worth paying for … truly astonishing.”

Allison and Richard Woodhouse

This pair met on the East dancefloor in March 2009 at 3am. They were both out for their birthdays and had a little boogie on the dancefloor together, with Allison saying there was an instant connection. The couple’s friends slowly left the club leaving the pair alone and five and a half years later they were married. Allison said her hen’s party also ended up at East to re-live the glory days (or early morning?) of where it all began. Who says nothing good happens after 1am?

We’ve all heard the saying “When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go,” and that couldn’t ring truer for one patron. Although in this case it sounded like he used urine as a weapon rather than suffering from a weak bladder. The young man recounted a day full of drinking with friends that ended up at East. Obviously the young men hadn’t had their fill and three absinthe shots were ordered — arguably the strongest alcohol behind the bar. When (obviously) they were refused, this “gentleman” decided to urinate on the bar. Whether it was in protest or simply a case of the aforementioned “when you’ve gotta go,” needless to say he was removed shortly after.

Around two years ago, two young ladies were innocently partying it up when one of them recognised a familiar face in one of the booths. They soon realised it was Mercedes Corby, the sister of the then imprisoned Schapelle Corby who was in a Balinese jail for drug smuggling.

One of the girls recalled Corby and her “posse” buying them drinks all night and as the night progressed, loose lips sunk ships. Corby started dishing the goss on Schapelle, including strongly alluding that Schapelle was in fact guilty. While the girls never acted on the intel, it’s remained a memorable night ever since.

Looking back, it sounds like the security at East garnered quite the reputation for themselves and their rough and tumble ways. One gentleman recalls a night where a security guard punched a female patron at the top of the stairs and watched her tumble all the way to the bottom. Another young man managed to get in at the age of 15 (“older brothers and facial hair” he said) and after some idiotic behaviour was “chicken winged” out of the venue.

“For my 22nd birthday I was at East in VIP and coincidentally so was Vicky and Scott from the English reality show Geordie Shore. They’re famous for partying and they did not let us down. Vicky had one too many tequila shots at the time and ended up on the floor — she left with a guy she came with.

The main thing I remember is Scott asking me if I had a boyfriend (which I did at the time) and asked if buying me tequila shots would make a difference. It didn’t but I took the shots anyway — which made for a really awful hung-over flight I had to catch at 6am to go to the Great Barrier Reef to meet my family for my birthday weekend. Now I know what a Geordie shore hangover feels like!”

“A friend of mine, for some reason, threw an end of financial year house party in 2016. Because it was end of financial year the theme was money so she’d made all these masks of rich celebrities — Justin Bieber, Donald Trump, Jay Z and our favourites — Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. We all got super drunk at the house then decided to go to East. We took the masks and pretended we were Kim and Kanye, even storming the stage and dancing alongside the DJ with these masks on.

Everyone went nuts and so the DJ let us stay up there and all we could see was people with their phones up, filming “Kim and Kanye” onstage. We got kicked out later and coincidentally so did another one of our friends who argued with the bouncer that legally he had to breathalyse her to evict her (he didn’t) before falling down the stairs and vomiting at the bottom.”
