Gold Coast reality TV stereotype: bimbo, personal trainers and hipsters

THE reality TV craze has done little to shift the image of the Coast as a city of image-obsessed, empty-headed narcissists.

Meet Queensland's Bachelors

THE Gold Coast stereotype, from the white shoes and fake tans to silicon boobs and gold handbags, has long defined, somewhat sadly, the city.

Unfortunately, the reality TV craze has done little to shift the image of the Coast as a city of image-obsessed, empty-headed narcissists.

Big Brother, The Bachelorette and The Bachelor have all played their part, along with the negativity of Gold Coast Cops and Channel Nine’s Coast edition of A Current Affair, that only seems to ever see the bogan side of life in what is, in truth, a booming, cosmopolitan city.

MEET THE COAST’S OWN BLOCKHEADS

Bimbos, musclebound personal trainers and hipsters all fulfil producers’ prejudices.

Former Miami resident Drew Woolford, 31, with his long alternative tresses, rolled into Channel 10s The Bachelorette to swoop a relatively normal Sydney-based Sam Frost off her feet — but his pet owl did it for him.

The Brisbane-based sleep technician, who is moving back to the Coast later in the year, left the flowers and chocolates at home and instead thought it was a bright idea to bring a bird along to meet Australia’s most eligible woman.

At least he made it past the first rose ceremony, unlike Gold Coasters Jessica Whitehouse and Zilda Williams who were kicked off the first episode of The Bachelor earlier this year.

Zilda became a producer’s worst nightmare when spoiler alert photos surfaced of her in UK media with another man before The Bachelor aired.

The 32-year-old model was snapped smooching with a mystery man in not-so-candid shots on the beach, sparking speculation she had tipped the paparrazi off herself.

Panning from a glamorous mansion in Sydney to half-renovated apartments in Melbourne, best friends on Channel 9’s The Block, Suzi Taylor and Voni Cosier, seem to care more about their hair than their hammers.

Suzi, 44, made headlines when full-frontal nude shots surfaced of the former Penthouse pin-up turned real estate agent.

Voni, 39, who has been described as a personal trainer on the show, dabbled in the area after spending several years helping women access boob jobs and other cosmetic procedures in the medical tourism field.

Second runner-up on Big Brother last year, Skye Wheatley, 21, who has unsurprisingly become best friends with local controversial social media sensation Kurt Coleman, raised eyebrows nationally with her lack of common sense and bizarre behaviour.

Her fake tan, bright pink lips and uber blonde locks cemented what many people think all Gold Coast women look like.

Ms Wheatley’s flame on the show, Gold Coaster Leo Burke, spent 98 per cent of the once-in-a-lifetime experience talking about the gym, busting weights in the gym and eating his proteins.

The intruder on Big Brother the previous year was also, surprise, a local personal trainer, Sam Wallace.

At least Gold Coasters can never be labelled boring.
