While having appeared in guest spots on Australian television series such as Wakefield, she said being cast in a recurring role was “very exciting”.

When asked if she had hopes and dreams to follow in the footsteps of soap-stars-turned-Hollywood-A-listers like Heath Ledger, Margot Robbie, Chris Hemsworth, Kylie Minogue and Guy Pearce, her answer was humble.

“I’m just thrilled to have the opportunity, taking one day at a time and enjoying the moment,” she said.

“While I think all of those stars have done incredible things in the industry, after the film and TV sector was hit so hard by Covid, actors are just really grateful to have the work right now.”

Thomson was born in Sydney but moved to the Coast when she turned one. Her parents settled in Bundall and then moved to Highland Park, where they still live.

She started her career as a dancer, falling in love with tap, jazz and hip-hop in her early school years.

Thomson said the shift to acting was “a natural fit”, and “I really got the acting bug in high school.”

She attended Nerang State High and graduated with a Bachelor of Musical Theatre from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University in 2016.

Thomson has lived in Sydney and Melbourne for the past six years, and says she “goes wherever the work is.”

For Home And Away, she had auditioned for the show a few times but was “thrilled” when receiving the green light.

“I had Covid when auditions were running so the day I was better my friend helped me film my audition tape,” she said.

“A few days later, I got asked to come in for a chemistry test with the other actors and a couple of days after that I was cast. I was crying and laughing at the same time.”

She said the film and television industry on the Gold Coast was “booming”.

“It’s exciting there are so many amazing productions in my hometown. It wasn’t a thing when I was growing up.

“I still love coming home to the Gold Coast. It’s home and there’s something special about it. It’s similar to Sydney but much more laid-back and chilled.”

Thomson is of Cook Islands descent and said having indigenous representation in Australian television series and films is paramount.

“I will be the first person from the Cook Islands to be on the show. I feel so honoured to be able to do it,” she said.

Thomson is playing the character of Kirby on the hit show, who plays keyboard in a band with her boyfriend Bob.

“Bob can be difficult at times and there is a lot of tension. Without giving too much away I can reveal that cracks will start to show and Kirby will get stuck between a rock and a hard place.”

She said there will be plenty of soapy action and “there’s always something dramatic happening in Summer Bay.”
