ERIC Burdon reassured the biggest Baby Boomer-loaded crowd in Blues on Broadbeach’s 15-year history they didn’t misspend their youth if they lived it to his swinging soundtrack.
Precise, pitch perfect and at times even playful, Burdon and his modern young new band of Animals (complete with trombone and sax) smashed out his hits and a few well chosen covers in an unforgettable headlining set in Surf Parade on Sunday night ... and all for free!
When I Was Young, Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood and Spill the Wine, a classic from his days fronting War, have taken on even more meaning for artist and audience with the passage of time
Burdon’s cover of Ian Dury and The Blockheads’ swanky Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick showed age hasn’t wearied his sense of mischief while Mama Told Me Not To Come is as naughty in 2016 as it was when Burdon recorded it in 1966.
Proving the love was mutual, the 75 year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer took the stage for what was the final show on his Australian tour proudly sporting a (sold out) Blues on Broadbeach festival T-shirt.
M
ore screens and speakers will help overcome the supply and demand problems Burdon’s popularity inevitably caused ... a goal on event organisers Broadbeach Alliance’s to-do list in future years.
However you saw it, Sunday night’s show was indeed a treat. You don’t get much of any thing this good in life for free these days.
An all-in singalong of Animals anthem We Gotta Get Out of this Place and House of the Rising Sun performed live under a full moon rising over the beach?
It don’t get much better than that.
Even Burdon was chuffed, posting a picture of his view from the stage on Instagram with the caption: To all my fans in Australia! Thank you for making this tour a great success.
