Construction of a new thrill-ride precinct at Dreamworld has reached a new milestone, with the installation of a historic plane which dates back more than 60 years.
The two-tonne fuselage of a Vietnam War-era RAAF Caribou A4-179 was lifted into Coomera theme park on Wednesday where it will become the centrepiece of the Rivertown precinct’s Murrissippi Motors area.
Dreamworld senior project manager Shane Boys said the frame of the aircraft had been reinforced with three tonnes of steel and when fully installed it would stand at 9m tall and 22m long.
“The installation of the Caribou A4-179 required an immense amount of planning and precision,” he said.
“It’s no small feat to lift a five-tonne fuselage into place, especially in an area where existing ride-track structures from both Jungle Rush and Murrissippi Motors cross.
“The internal steel frame supporting the Caribou will carry the wings and tail and demonstrates the complex engineering that goes into creating these immersive environments. “We are very proud of how smoothly everything came together.”
The fuselage has been brought to the Gold Coast from NSW.
The wings and tail, custom-built to fit the fuselage, will be installed at a later date.
The Rivertown precinct, the park’s latest new attraction, is rising rapidly, with construction underway on a restaurant and the motoring buildings.
The project is expected to open to the public before Christmas.
