GOLD Coast Show organisers have breathed a sigh of relief after council officers revealed they would not approve an application for a rival carnival on the same weekend as the city’s main exhibition.
A feud between the Showmen’s Guild of Australasia and the Gold Coast Show Society prompted a group of stall and ride operators to team up with Westfield Helensvale to try to establish the “Helensvale Fun Fair Spectacular”, a three-day event on the same weekend.

But a council spokeswoman yesterday said the application for the rival event had not been made with the council in time.
“Processing an application for an event of this size would require investigation of many factors in order to ensure that all public, health, safety and amenity issues are fully considered before any approval can be given,” the spokeswoman said.
“Part of this process is to … seek feedback from a range of stakeholders, including the emergency services and other key government agencies.
“Due to late receipt of the application it is not possible for the city to process this application in time for the event proposed.”
Gold Coast Show Society president Sydney “Slim” Boese was overjoyed to hear the Helensvale fair would not go ahead this year.
It will be the first time since the show’s inception 110 years ago that the Showmen’s Guild will not own the contract to provide entertainment.
Mr Boese said the fact that negotiations with the Showmen’s Guild turned sour this year did not mean the show society would turn its back on the group in years to come.
“The only thing that they did that didn’t suit us as far as we’re concerned is they didn’t put a contract on the table,” Mr Boese said.
The 2016 Gold Coast Show will be held at the Gold Coast Turf Club, Bundall from August 26-28.
