Chris Hemsworth updates fans on Alzheimer’s disease predisposition risk

Chris Hemsworth has updated fans about his predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease and proves there’s nothing wrong with his memory, with a cheeky look back at his soapies past.

Alzheimer’s gene carrier Chris Hemsworth has updated fans on his health following the death of his grandfather from the cruel disease which is now showing symptoms in his dad.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth, 40, revealed his anger after incorrect media reports surfaced that he had retired from acting following a dementia diagnosis.

Hemsworth was revealed to have a predisposition to the disease when he took part in genetic screening during a documentary two years ago.

As the documentary aired around the same time Hemsworth took a short break from work to spend time with his young family in Byron Bay, rumours swirled.

“It really kind of pissed me off because it felt like I had been vulnerable with something personal and shared this,” he said.

“No matter how much I said ‘This is not a death sentence,’ the story became that I have dementia and I’m reconsidering life and retiring and so on.”

Hemsworth went on to share with Vanity Fair that his grandfather had died from Alzheimer’s last year and his dad Craig had recently become symptomatic.

“I know my dad is going through a transition of acceptance around ‘I’m not this big, strong man with all the answers who everybody looks to for guidance now,’” Hemsworth said.

“He’s much more the observer now, rather than leading the pack. It’s a reminder to me because those are exactly the qualities I need: stillness, observation, absorption, a respect for the present moment.”

The Thor star showed his memory was still very much in tact by taking fans on a lighthearted look back at his time on Channel 7 soap Home and Away.

“I always felt like, Oh, I’m just being kind of put over here in the corner: ‘Yeah, just take your shirt off and go over there, and now you’re working at the gym and now you’re working at the bar,’” Hemsworth said.

The megastar this week reunited with his old Summer Bay pal Kate Ritchie, who played long-running character Sally Fletcher, on her Nova radio show to promote his newest film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

He also appeared on the red carpet in Sydney on Thursday for the film’s Australian premiere.
