Prince William and Kate have unexpectedly run into a comedy legend on their royal tour of Scotland.

The couple – who are spending two days in the country for a series of engagements – bumped into American-British star Ruby Wax as she was waiting to catch a ferry on the Isle of Iona, off Mull on Scotland’s west coast.

“It’s funny because I’m on a retreat there. And I thought, why are they interrupting my silent retreat? I mean, you could break the silent retreat for this,” Wax, 72, told the UK’s Mirror.

The popular media personality was a friend of William’s mother, Diana, and was also full of praise for her son.

“I didn’t realise he was so good-looking, he looks like his mother.”

Wax has been a staple of UK television for decades appearing on and writing comedy and chat shows. On Ruby Wax Meets… she interviewed both Madonna and Sarah, Duchess of York.

She also worked with Jennifer Sounders and Dawn French on hit sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.

Wax is now an author, academic and advocate for mental health.

Back in 2017, Wax appeared in a short film discussing her mental health as part of a campaign by Heads Together, the charity which was at the time run by William, Kate and Prince Harry.

Her encounter with William and Kate came after the couple spent two hours on the tiny island.

During day two of their whistlestop tour, the pair also visited the Ardura Community Forest and met with a group of excited children, one of whom presented Kate with a miniature bouquet.

William and Kate, who celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, stayed in a self-catered cottage overnight for the trip.

They shared a message on social media on their wedding anniversary, writing: “Wonderful to be back on the Isle of Mull. Thank you to everyone for such a warm welcome. ️W & C”

The whistlestop tour saw them mingle with local craftspeople, farmers and residents in a bid to help highlight the importance of protecting and championing the natural environment.

It also marks the Princess of Wales’ first overnight tour since her cancer diagnosis early last year.

She stepped back from royal duties after going public with her difficult news, undergoing chemotherapy for several months before announcing she had completed treatment in September.

Earlier this year, Kate revealed she is now in remission, and is continuing her gradual return to public life.
