British pop star Michelle Heaton has shared a confronting private video from the midst of her alcohol addiction.

The 44-year-old singer, who is best known for being part of the noughties pop group Liberty X, opened up about her “mental torture” she suffered while battling her years-long addiction.

In light of alcohol awareness week, the mother-of-two uploaded a video of herself from her 41st birthday on Instagram, in which she could be seen sitting on the floor with a bottle of wine.

“Oh my god I’m actually gonna be sick, I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Just A Little hitmaker Heaton says in the video.

She continued, “The kids have gone and I’m sat here by myself opening up my own presents. I’m opening up my cards and presents alone.

“I actually think I might cry. I fell asleep in my clothes and my makeup. I think I might be sick. I can’t do today.”

In the clip, Heaton is seen quickly descending into a panicked state, repeatedly saying, “F**k what am I going to do?”

Explaining the clip in the caption, the reality TV star explained how “broken” she was at the time it was filmed as she marks three years and two months of being sober.

“I don’t recognise this person. This was my 41st birthday I’m coming up to my 45th in 2 weeks time,” Heaton began.

“I would not be here if I didn’t surrender or accept I was an alcoholic!

“The reality of how alcoholism took over my entire life and those around me were devastating. Complete and utter lack of power or choice.

“Maybe things couldn’t have been different for me, but if I can share and someone relates to anything on this video for YOU or your loved ones PLEASE … don’t ignore the signs, the ominous warnings and the consequences.”

After Liberty X split in 2007, Heaton signed a solo record deal which was cancelled after just two months.

At the time, she was married to Andy Scott-Lee, the brother of Steps singer Lisa Scott-Lee, with the couple splitting after just two years together in 2008.

Following a string of reality TV appearances, including Celebrity Big Brother and Come Dine with Me, Heaton was hit with a health scare in 2012 when she was diagnosed with a mutated BRCA2 gene. She was then told she had an 80 per cent chance of developing breast cancer, prompting her to have a double mastectomy and reconstructive breast surgery.

Heaton is now married to Irish businessman Hugh Hanley, whom she wed in 2010 before the couple welcomed two children.

She has credited her husband with helping her fight addiction, telling UK talk show Loose Women in 2021 at the height of her dependence, she drank alcohol everyday for three years.

While appearing on the panel, Heaton said she had been sober for 13 months, managing to get clean after a stint in rehab in 2020.

Heaton also read out an emotional letter penned by Hanley, which he sent to her while she was in the health facility.

“Watching you spiral like this has been very hard to deal with. I couldn’t talk to my best friend. I have been left embarrassed by you, but that was never you,” Hanley wrote in the note.

He continued, as read out by Heaton: “I have also tried to help the kids forget your behaviour. It has turned you into a liar. Your addictive behaviour has hurt me a lot ‘Chelle, and you’ve become someone who’s very untrustworthy. Your behaviour has robbed me of my wife and the kids of their mummy.”

Adding of her recovery, Heaton said she had a “happy sense of being now”.

“I had no regards to what was happening to my family. It’s shameful to say that sometimes they were in my way,” she said.

“When the kids really needed a cuddle, I just wasn’t there for them. It wasn’t until I got sober, clean, that I could recognise how I was behaving.”
